Bayt al-Maqdis and the Third Temple: 3,000 Years of History

From Sulayman's (AS) prayer and the armies of Nebuchadnezzar and Titus, to the day Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) cleared the rubbish with his own cloak, and what the Prophet ﷺ foretold about Jerusalem.

The questionHow did one hilltop in Jerusalem witness two ancient destructions, Umar's (RA) restoration, and today's Third Temple movement, and what do the authentic hadiths actually say?

Executive Summary

Thirty-five acres of stone in the heart of Jerusalem sit at the center of the world's biggest geopolitical and religious fault line. To understand today's 'Third Temple' headlines, you first have to walk through the 3,000-year story of Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.

Chapter 1 · Origins & Sulayman (AS)

40 Years After the Ka'bah: Who Built Al-Aqsa First, and What Did Sulayman (AS) Do?

A lot of people assume the history of Al-Masjid al-Aqsa started with King Solomon (Prophet Sulayman AS) around 1000 BCE. Wait until you read what Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ in Sahih Bukhari (3366) and Sahih Muslim (520):

Abu Dharr asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, which mosque was placed on earth first?' He replied: 'Al-Masjid al-Haram (in Makkah).' Abu Dharr asked: 'Then which?' He replied: 'Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.' Abu Dharr asked: 'How much time was between them?' He said: 'Forty years.'

As Hafiz Ibn Hajar explains in Fath al-Bari, just as Ibrahim (AS) raised the foundations of the Ka'bah on an ancient site, Al-Masjid al-Aqsa was established millennia before Dawud and Sulayman (peace be upon them) as a pure house of Tawhid (monotheism).

When Prophet Dawud (AS) and his son Prophet Sulayman (AS) ruled Jerusalem around the 10th century BCE, Sulayman (AS) renewed and expanded the sanctuary (Bayt al-Maqdis) on a magnificent scale, employing even the jinn by Allah's command (Surah Saba' 34:12-13). And when he finished building it, he asked Allah for three gifts, including that anyone who comes to this Mosque solely to pray exits cleansed of sin like the day his mother gave birth to him (Sunan an-Nasa'i 693).

SabaSurah 34 · verse 12–14

    12. And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind - its morning [journey was that of] a month - and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them from Our command - We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze

    13. They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], "Work, O family of David, in gratitude." And few of My servants are grateful

    14. And when We decreed for Solomon death, nothing indicated to the jinn his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment

When Sulayman completed the building of Bayt al-Maqdis, he asked Allah for three things: divine judgment, an unmatched kingdom, and that anyone entering desiring only prayer emerges cleansed of all sins like a newborn infant.

Sahih al-Bukhari ↗Hadith 3366Sahih

I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, which mosque was set up on earth first?' He replied, 'Al-Masjid al-Haram.' I asked, 'Then which?' He replied, 'Al-Masjid al-Aqsa.' I asked, 'How much time was between them?' He said, 'Forty years.'

Chapter 2 · 586 BCE: The First Destruction

When Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian Army Burned the First Sanctuary to the Ground

After Sulayman (AS) passed away, the kingdom split in two, and over the centuries wide segments of the ruling elite fell into idolatry, corruption, and killing the reformers and prophets sent to warn them. As Allah describes in Surah al-Isra' (17:4-7), when the first corrupting transgression reached its peak, Allah sent against them servants of mighty military power who entered the very heart of their homes.

In 586 BCE, the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II (Bukhtanassar) besieged Jerusalem, breached its walls, stripped the cedar and gold from Solomon's building, burned the sanctuary to the ground, and marched the surviving leadership in chains to Babylon.

And in that devastation, the original Ark of the Covenant (at-Tabut) vanished from history, never to be seen in the Second Temple that came later.

Al-IsraSurah 17 · verse 4–5

    4. And We conveyed to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness

    5. So when the [time of] promise came for the first of them, We sent against you servants of Ours - those of great military might, and they probed [even] into the homes, and it was a promise fulfilled

Chapter 3 · The Second Temple & Herod

Returning From Babylon and Herod's Giant Stone Expansion

Seventy years later, after the Persian king Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon, the exiles were allowed to return to Jerusalem and rebuild a modest Second Sanctuary around 516 BCE under Zerubbabel. Centuries later (around 20 BCE), the Roman-appointed client king Herod the Great launched a massive engineering project, building giant retaining walls filled with multi-ton limestone blocks (including what is known today as the Western Wall / Al-Buraq Wall) to create the wide trapezoidal plaza we still see today.

Into that exact Second Temple compound walked three noble Prophets of Allah: Zakariyya (AS), Yahya (John the Baptist, AS), and Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, AS), along with his pure mother Maryam (AS).

Wait, how were those prophets treated? Zakariyya and Yahya (AS) were murdered, and when Isa (AS) exposed the hypocrisy and corruption of the priesthood, they plotted with the Roman governor to crucify him, before Allah raised Isa (AS) safely to Himself (Quran 4:157-158). Before leaving, Isa (AS) warned them that not a single stone of that proud building would be left standing upon another.

Chapter 4 · 70 CE: The Roman Destruction

70 CE: How Roman Legions Under Titus Leveled the Second Temple

Just decades after Allah raised Isa (AS), the second major wave of destruction arrived. In 66 CE, a fierce rebellion broke out in Judea against the Roman Empire. Four years later, in the summer of 70 CE, the Roman commander Titus (later Emperor) surrounded Jerusalem with four Roman legions.

Inside the besieged walls, rival rebel factions actually burned each other's grain stores! When Roman battering rams finally broke through in August 70 CE, Roman soldiers hurled torches into the Second Temple. The intense fire melted the gold leaf into the cracks between the foundation stones, so Roman troops pried apart every single stone to scrape out the melted gold.

Sixty-five years later (135 CE), after the Bar Kokhba revolt, Roman Emperor Hadrian plowed over the ruins of Jerusalem, renamed the city Aelia Capitolina, and barred Jews from entering.

And here comes one of history's most astonishing episodes: in 363 CE, the pagan Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate decided to rebuild the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem specifically to disprove the prophecy of Jesus (Isa AS) that the Temple would remain ruined! What happened when Julian's workers started digging the foundations? Multiple contemporary Roman and Christian historians (including the pagan historian Ammianus Marcellinus) recorded that terrifying balls of fire and seismic blasts erupted from the underground foundation trenches, burning the workers' tools and forcing Julian to abandon the project forever.

Al-IsraSurah 17 · verse 7

    7. [And said], "If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to yourselves." Then when the final promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the temple in Jerusalem, as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction

Chapter 5 · Al-Isra' & Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)

How a Trash Dump Became the Noble Sanctuary Again Under Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)

For centuries under Byzantine rule, the Noble Sanctuary plateau in Jerusalem was left desolate and deliberately used as the city's garbage dump to spite the memory of the old sanctuary. Then came the night of Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj, when Allah carried Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Al-Masjid al-Aqsa, where he led all the Prophets, Ibrahim, Musa, Dawud, Sulayman, and Isa (peace be upon them all), in prayer (Sahih Muslim 172).

Look closely at what that night meant: the torch of Ibrahim, Dawud, Sulayman, and Isa (peace be upon them) was officially handed to the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ!

In 15 AH (637 CE), when the Muslims peacefully liberated Jerusalem without shedding a drop of blood, the Christian Patriarch Sophronius asked that Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) come in person to sign the Covenant of Umar (al-'Uhdah al-'Umariyyah). After signing the guarantee of safety for Jerusalem's inhabitants, Umar (RA) asked to be shown the sanctuary of Dawud (AS).

Finding the plateau buried under decades of Byzantine trash, what did the Commander of the Believers do? He didn't order conquered locals to clean it, Umar (RA) knelt down, spread his own cloak, scooped up the rubbish with his bare hands, and carried it out himself! Seeing their Caliph, the Companions and Muslim soldiers immediately joined in with their cloaks until the entire Noble Sanctuary was clean, and Umar (RA) built the congregational wooden mosque at the southern end of the plaza.

Chapter 6 · Today's Headlines & Prophetic Future

Inside Today's Third Temple Movement, and What the Prophet ﷺ Foretold About Jerusalem

Wait, what do traditional Jewish rabbis versus modern Temple Mount activist groups actually say about building a 'Third Temple' today?

Here is a crucial fact most social media videos never tell you: for centuries, the historic Orthodox rabbinic consensus (codified by Maimonides and upheld by the Chief Rabbinate sign still posted at the entrance to the plaza) strictly forbade Jews from even setting foot on the Temple Mount plateau, because every person today is considered ritually impure by contact with the dead (tamei met) and might accidentally step on the former Holy of Holies!

However, since the late 1980s, specific ideological organizations, most notably The Temple Institute (Machon HaMikdash, founded in 1987 in Jerusalem), Boneh Israel, and allied Religious Zionist activist groups, have worked to overturn that rabbinic ban. They have already crafted over 60 ritual vessels (including the golden Menorah, silver trumpets, harps, and priestly garments), trained young men of the Kohanim priestly lineage, and imported red heifers from Texas in hopes of performing the purification ritual.

Wait, what did Prophet Muhammad ﷺ actually prophesy about Jerusalem in the End Times? In Sunan Abi Dawud (4294) and Musnad Ahmad (22023) (graded Sahih by al-Albani), Mu'adh ibn Jabal (RA) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
> 'The flourishing of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) will be a sign of the desertion of Yathrib (Madinah); the desertion of Yathrib will be a sign of the outbreak of the Great Battle (al-Malhamah); the outbreak of the Great Battle will be a sign of the conquest of Constantinople; and the conquest of Constantinople will be a sign of the emergence of the Dajjal.'

And when Dajjal emerges and besieges the believers in Jerusalem, Prophet Isa ibn Maryam (AS) will descend, slay the Dajjal at the Gate of Ludd nearby, and rule from the Blessed Land of Ash-Sham with complete justice. The final word over Bayt al-Maqdis belongs to Allah and the followers of His Prophets.

Narrated Mu'adh ibn Jabal: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The flourishing state of Jerusalem will be when Yathrib is in ruins, the ruined state of Yathrib will be when the great war comes, the outbreak of the great war will be at the conquest of Constantinople and the conquest of Constantinople when the Dajjal (Antichrist) comes forth. He (the Prophet) struck his thigh or his shoulder with his hand and said: This is as true as you are here or as you are sitting (meaning Mu'adh ibn Jabal)

An-Nawwas b. Sam`an reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made a mention of the Dajjal one day in the morning. He (ﷺ) sometimes described him to be insignificant and sometimes described (his turmoil) as very significant (and we felt) as if he were in the cluster of the date-palm trees. When we went to him (to the Holy Prophet) in the evening and he read (the signs of fear) in our faces, he (ﷺ) said:What is the matter with you? We said: Allah's Messenger, you made a mention of the Dajjal in the morning (sometimes describing him) to be insignificant and sometimes very important, until we began to think as if he were present in some (near) part of the cluster of the date-palm trees. Thereupon he (ﷺ) said: I harbor fear in regard to you in so many other things besides the Dajjal. If he comes forth while I am among you, I shall contend with him on your behalf, but if he comes forth while I am not amongst you, a man must contend on his own behalf and Allah would take care of every Muslim on my behalf (and safeguard him against his evil). He (Dajjal) would be a young man with twisted, contracted hair, and a blind eye. I compare him to `Abd-ul-`Uzza b. Qatan. He who amongst you would survive to see him should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf (xviii). He would appear on the way between Syria and Iraq and would spread mischief right and left. O servant of Allah! adhere (to the path of Truth). We said: Allah's Messenger, how long would he stay on the earth? He (ﷺ) said: For forty days, one day like a year and one day like a month and one day like a week and the rest of the days would be like your days. We said: Allah's Messenger, would one day's prayer suffice for the prayers of day equal to one year? Thereupon he (ﷺ) said: No, but you must make an estimate of time (and then observe prayer). We said: Allah's Messenger, how quickly would he walk upon the earth? Thereupon he (ﷺ) said: Like cloud driven by the wind. He would come to the people and invite them (to a wrong religion) and they would affirm their faith in him and respond to him. He would then give command to the sky and there would be rainfall upon the earth and it would grow crops. Then in the evening, their pasturing animals would come to them with their humps very high and their udders full of milk and their flanks stretched. He would then come to another people and invite them. But they would reject him and he would go away from them and there would be drought for them and nothing would be left with them in the form of wealth. He would then walk through the waste land and say to it: Bring forth your treasures, and the treasures would come out and collect (themselves) before him like the swarm of bees. He would then call a person brimming with youth and strike him with the sword and cut him into two pieces and (make these pieces lie at a distance which is generally) between the archer and his target. He would then call (that young man) and he will come forward laughing with his face gleaming (with happiness) and it would be at this very time that Allah would send Jesus, son of Mary, and he will descend at the white minaret in the eastern side of Damascus wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two Angels. When he would lower his head, there would fall beads of perspiration from his head, and when he would raise it up, beads like pearls would scatter from it. Every non-believer who would smell the odor of his self would die and his breath would reach as far as he would be able to see. He would then search for him (Dajjal) until he would catch hold of him at the gate of Ludd and would kill him. Then a people whom Allah had protected would come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he would wipe their faces and would inform them of their ranks in Paradise and it would be under such conditions that Allah would reveal to Jesus these words: I have brought forth from amongst My servants such people against whom none would be able to fight; you take these people safely to Tur. And then Allah would send Gog and Magog and they would swarm down from every slope. The first of them would pass the lake of Tiberias and drink out of it. And when the last of them would pass, he would say: There was once water there. Jesus and his companions would then be besieged here (at Tur, and they would be so much hard pressed) that the head of the ox would be dearer to them than one hundred dinars and Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would supplicate Allah, Who would send to them insects (which would attack their necks) and in the morning they would perish like one single person. Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would then come down to the earth and they would not find in the earth as much space as a single span which is not filled with their putrefaction and stench. Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would then again beseech Allah, Who would send birds whose necks would be like those of Bactrian camels and they would carry them and throw them where God would will. Then Allah would send rain which no house of clay or (the tent of) camels' hairs would keep out and it would wash away the earth until it could appear to be a mirror. Then the earth would be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing and, as a result thereof, there would grow (such a big) pomegranate that a group of persons would be able to eat that, and seek shelter under its skin and milch cow would give so much milk that a whole party would be able to drink it. And the milch camel would give such (a large quantity of) milk that the whole tribe would be able to drink out of that and the milch sheep would give so much milk that the whole family would be able to drink out of that and at that time Allah would send a pleasant wind which would soothe (people) even under their armpits, and would take the life of every Muslim and only the wicked would survive who would commit adultery like asses and the Last Hour would come to them

Al-Aqsa & the Third Temple: Viral Rumors vs. Historical Facts

Sorting viral rumors from verified sources.

❌ Viral Claim #1

Al-Masjid al-Aqsa is only the silver-domed Qibli building at the south, or only the golden Dome of the Rock.

✅ What's Actually True

In Islamic law and history, Al-Masjid al-Aqsa is the ENTIRE 144-dunam (35-acre) walled sanctuary plateau, including the Qibli Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, the courtyards, and the gates.

❌ Viral Claim #2

All Jewish religious authorities agree on entering the Temple Mount and building a Third Temple today.

✅ What's Actually True

Traditional Orthodox rabbinic law (including the Chief Rabbinate sign at the gate) strictly forbids entering the plateau due to ritual impurity (tamei met). The push to enter and build comes specifically from activist movements like the Temple Institute and Boneh Israel.

🛡️ What the Prophet ﷺ told us to actually do

Memorise the opening of al-Kahf

"Whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Surat al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal."

Muslim 809a

Seek refuge in every prayer

After the final tashahhud: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the Messiah al-Dajjal."

Muslim 588a
