An Army Swallowed Up at al-Bayda

In brief

An army that marches to attack one seeking refuge at the Kaaba will be swallowed by the earth at al-Bayda, between Mecca and Medina.

A'ishah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said an army would come against the House (the Kaaba), and when they were at a level stretch of land (al-Bayda) they would be swallowed, the first of them and the last; she asked how those forced along without their will would fare, and he said they would be swallowed with them but raised according to their intentions (Sahih Muslim 2884; cf. Abu Dawud 4286).

Reported among the events of the end of time, in several narrations tied to the era of the Mahdi; scholars set no date.

This is distinct from the three great sinkings (khasf) that are major signs; here a specific army is swallowed at a named place. Al-Nawawi stresses the lesson of intention: those driven along unwillingly are judged by their hearts, not merely their presence.

Guard your intentions and the company you march with; a person is gathered on the Day of Resurrection according to what was in the heart.

Phase 3 / 7Before the Dajjal

Mu'adh ibn Jabal's narration gives this order: Jerusalem flourishes, Yathrib is in ruins, the great battle, the conquest of Constantinople, then the Dajjal (Sunan Abi Dawud 4294, graded hasan by al-Albani). Sahih Muslim 2897 places the battle at al-A'maq or Dabiq, then Constantinople, then the Dajjal. Sunan Abi Dawud 4292 puts a truce with the Romans before the battle. The narrations on the Mahdi do not state his place in this order.
