A Mass Death Like the Murrain of Sheep
In brief
A sudden, widespread mortality that takes people quickly 'like the murrain of sheep' - the third of the six signs the Prophet ﷺ named to Awf ibn Malik.
Awf ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said during the expedition of Tabuk: 'Count six signs before the Hour: my death; then the conquest of Jerusalem; then a mass death that will take you like the qu'as (murrain) of sheep; then abundance of wealth...; then a tribulation that enters every Arab house; then a truce with the Romans which they will betray...' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3176).
Named third in Awf's six, after the conquest of Jerusalem and before the overflowing of wealth; its instances recur rather than occurring once.
Al-Nawawi and Ibn Hajar explain 'qu'as al-ghanam' as a disease that strikes a flock and kills it swiftly, so the sign is a rapid, sweeping death among people. They cite the plague of Amwas (18 AH), which took many Companions in Sham, as an early instance, without restricting the hadith to any single epidemic.
Keep your heart ready for death, observe the prophetic guidance on plague (neither entering nor fleeing an afflicted land), and care for the sick and the bereaved.

Narrated `Auf bin Malik:I went to the Prophet (ﷺ) during the Ghazwa of Tabuk while he was sitting in a leather tent. He said, "Count six signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will afflict you (and kill you in great numbers) as the plague that afflicts sheep, the increase of wealth to such an extent that even if one is given one hundred Dinars, he will not be satisfied; then an affliction which no Arab house will escape, and then a truce between you and Bani Al-Asfar (i.e. the Byzantines) who will betray you and attack you under eighty flags. Under each flag will be twelve thousand soldiers

al-Nawawi and Ibn Hajar (d. 852 AH)d. 676 AH
Identify the third of Awf ibn Malik's six signs as a widespread, swift mortality 'like the qu'as of sheep' - a disease that fells a flock quickly - and point to the plague of Amwas in 18 AH, which took many Companions, as an early instance, without closing the description to it.
Sharh Sahih Muslim; Fath al-Bari, on the hadith of Awf ibn Malik (al-Bukhari 3176)
Meaning and context
The third of the six signs the Prophet ﷺ named to Awf ibn Malik is a mass death that takes people swiftly 'like the murrain of sheep'. Scholars point to the plague of Amwas as an early instance and leave the description open; there is nothing fixed to count.
Narrations behind this panel: Sahih al-Bukhari 3176 · Sahih al-Bukhari 7133
What the commentators said it means
- 'Qu'as al-ghanam' is a disease that fells a flock quickly; the sign is a rapid, sweeping mortality among people: al-Nawawi, Ibn Hajar.
- The plague of Amwas in 18 AH, which took many Companions in Sham, is cited as an early instance, not as the only one.
Read with care
- No epidemic is 'the' fulfilment, and no outbreak may be read as a timetable for the Hour.
