The Reality of Dajjal: Ibn Sayyad and the Prophetic Test
Forget the 60-foot monster myths and the 'Dajjal is just modern technology' theories. Here is what happened when the Prophet ﷺ investigated Ibn Sayyad in the streets of Madinah.

Is Dajjal a giant monster, an invisible global system, or a real human man? The clearest answer comes from a remarkable scene in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim: the Prophet ﷺ walking with Umar ibn al-Khattab through Madinah, hiding behind palm trunks to listen to a strange teenager named Ibn Sayyad.
If you ask ten people what the Dajjal looks like, half of them will picture a towering monster stretching toward the sky, and the other half will tell you he isn't even a person at all, just a metaphor for satellites, AI, or global banking.
Both groups have missed what the Prophet ﷺ actually said.
In authentic Sunni theology, al-Masih ad-Dajjal (the False Messiah) is a real, mortal human man from the descendants of Adam (AS). He eats food, walks through markets, rides a mount, and will eventually be killed by Prophet Isa (AS) at the Gate of Ludd. Why does the word Masih appear in his name? Classical scholars like Imam an-Nawawi explain that while Isa (AS) is the Masih of Guidance (whose touch healed the blind and sick by Allah's permission), Dajjal is the Masih of Misguidance because one of his eyes is mamsuh (wiped flat/blind) and because he will sweep (yamshu) across the earth in forty days.
In the island hadith (Sahih Muslim 2942a), Tamim describes the prisoner as a'zamu insanin ra'aynahu khalqan (the largest human we had ever seen in build). That Arabic phrase does NOT mean a 60-foot mythological titan. It means a heavily built, stocky, broad-shouldered man, the way you describe a massive wrestler or bodybuilder. How do we know for sure? Because of what happened right inside the streets of Madinah.
In Madinah lived a young Jewish boy named Saf (Ibn Sayyad). He was a normal-sized teenager walking around the neighborhood, yet he had eerie psychic-like abilities, spoke in riddles like soothsayers, and claimed people came to him with true and false news.
One day, the Prophet ﷺ and Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) went out and found Ibn Sayyad playing with other boys near the fort of Banu Maghalah. Before revealing himself, the Prophet ﷺ quietly moved from palm trunk to palm trunk, trying to overhear what Ibn Sayyad was muttering under his blanket before the boy noticed him (Sahih Bukhari 1354, Sahih Muslim 2930a).
The Interrogation in the Palm Grove
When the Prophet ﷺ stepped up and tapped him, they had a tense exchange:
- The Test: The Prophet ﷺ secretly held Surah ad-Dukhan Verse 10 ('Wait for the day when the sky brings a visible smoke') in his mind and asked, 'What have I hidden for you?'
- The Partial Hit: Ibn Sayyad couldn't see the full revelation. Like a jinn-assisted fortune teller catching only a broken syllable, he stammered: 'Ad-Dukh!'
- The Rebuke: The Prophet ﷺ told him sharply: 'Stay in your place (be humiliated)! You will never go beyond your rank!' Meaning: you are just a soothsayer with a jinn companion, not someone receiving revelation.
- Umar's Reaction: Umar (RA) immediately said, 'O Messenger of Allah, let me strike his neck!' The Prophet ﷺ stopped him with a profound principle: 'If he is him (the Dajjal), you will never be able to overpower him; and if he is not him, there is no good for you in killing him.'
Why did the Prophet ﷺ spend so much time describing Dajjal's face, hair, eyes, and walk? Because Dajjal will come with mind-bending illusions, making rain fall, bringing wasteland to life, and appearing to raise the dead with the help of devils. If you look at his 'miracles,' you might get confused. So the Prophet ﷺ gave us a visual ID card that Dajjal can never edit or hide:
- 1. Build & Complexion: He is a young man (shabb), short in height (qasir), yet stocky, broad, and powerfully built (jasim), with a reddish-white complexion (ahmar).
- 2. Hair: His hair is fiercely curled and thick (qatat), looking from a distance like coiled snakes.
- 3. Walk: He is pigeon-toed / bow-legged (afhaj), walking with his legs set wide apart.
- 4. The Blind Eye & The Protruding Grape: One eye is completely blind and wiped flat (mamsuh), while the other eye bulges out like a floating grape (inabah طafiyah) with a thick piece of skin growing at its corner. And above all, the Prophet ﷺ gave the ultimate filter: 'Know that your Lord is NOT one-eyed!' (Sahih Bukhari 7131).
- 5. The Forehead Stamp (K-F-R): Written clearly between his eyes are the three Arabic letters ك ف ر (Kafir / Disbeliever). Every single believer, whether they know how to read and write or are completely illiterate, will be able to read it clearly (Sahih Muslim 2933b).
- 6. Childless: Despite claiming to be Lord of the worlds, he is completely sterile (la yuladu lahu) and can never father a single child (Sahih Muslim 2927).
You have probably heard this story in lectures or YouTube shorts: 'Dajjal's parents will remain childless for 30 years; his father will be tall and thin with a beak-like nose, his mother will be heavy-set, and he will be born sleeping with his eyes open...'
Wait a second, is that narration actually authentic?
This narration appears in Jami' at-Tirmidhi (2248) and Musnad Ahmad. However, every link of its chain runs through a narrator named Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an. Classical masters of hadith criticism, including Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Yahya ibn Ma'in, Abu Zur'ah, and modern verifier Shaykh al-Albani, graded Ali ibn Zayd as Da'if (weak) because of his poor memory and confusion in chains.
What IS authentic about his family background?
- He comes from a Jewish lineage (confirmed by the authentic reports of Ibn Sayyad in Sahih Muslim and the 70,000 followers of Isfahan wearing tayalisah shawls in Sahih Muslim 2944).
- When he grows angry because of a personal outrage (ghadbah yaghdabuha), his public emergence is triggered (Sahih Muslim 2932).
- He himself will never have children (Sahih Muslim 2927).
In the 20th century, a few modernist writers, like Muhammad Asad in The Road to Mecca and some rationalist commentators, felt uncomfortable with supernatural-sounding prophecies. So they proposed a metaphorical theory: 'The one-eyed Dajjal isn't a person; it's modern materialistic civilization, television, or technology that only sees with the material eye and is blind in the spiritual eye.'
At first glance, that sounds poetic. Until you actually read the hadiths.
4 Reasons the Metaphor Theory Collapses Instantly
1. Can a 'civilization' be suspected in a teenager in Madinah? The Prophet ﷺ hid behind palm trees to check if Ibn Sayyad was the Dajjal. You don't hide behind a tree to see if a boy is 'Western banking.'
2. Does a 'system' have curly hair, bow legs, and no children? The Prophet ﷺ described Dajjal's hair, forehead skin, eye defect, walk, and sterility in physical detail.
3. Can a 'metaphor' be killed with a spear at the Gate of Ludd? In Sahih Muslim (2937a), when Dajjal sees Prophet Isa (AS) at the Gate of Ludd, he begins to dissolve like salt in water, and Isa (AS) strikes him with his weapon and shows the believers his blood on the lance. Global systems don't bleed on a spear.
4. The Young Martyr Hadiths: In Sahih Muslim (2938), Dajjal saws a young believer in two, walks between the two halves, calls him back to life, and asks, 'Do you believe in me now?' The youth laughs in his face and says, 'I have only increased in certainty about who you are!'

Narrated Ibn `Umar:`Umar set out along with the Prophet (ﷺ) with a group of people to Ibn Saiyad till they saw him playing with the boys near the hillocks of Bani Mughala. Ibn Saiyad at that time was nearing his puberty and did not notice (us) until the Prophet (ﷺ) stroked him with his hand and said to him, "Do you testify that I am Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?" Ibn Saiyad looked at him and said, "I testify that you are the Messenger of illiterates." Then Ibn Saiyad asked the Prophet (ﷺ), "Do you testify that I am Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?" The Prophet (ﷺ) refuted it and said, "I believe in Allah and His Apostles." Then he said (to Ibn Saiyad), "What do you think?" Ibn Saiyad answered, "True people and liars visit me." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You have been confused as to this matter." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "I have kept something (in my mind) for you, (can you tell me that?)" Ibn Saiyad said, "It is Al-Dukh (the smoke)." (2) The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Let you be in ignominy. You cannot cross your limits." On that `Umar, said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Allow me to chop his head off." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If he is he (i.e. Dajjal), then you cannot overpower him, and if he is not, then there is no use of murdering him." (Ibn `Umar added): Later on Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) once again went along with Ubai bin Ka`b to the date-palm trees (garden) where Ibn Saiyad was staying. The Prophet (ﷺ) wanted to hear something from Ibn Saiyad before Ibn Saiyad could see him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) saw him lying covered with a sheet and from where his murmurs were heard. Ibn Saiyad's mother saw Allah's Apostle while he was hiding himself behind the trunks of the date-palm trees. She addressed Ibn Saiyad, "O Saf ! (and this was the name of Ibn Saiyad) Here is Muhammad." And with that Ibn Saiyad got up. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Had this woman left him (Had she not disturbed him), then Ibn Saiyad would have revealed the reality of his case

It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah from his father who said:"The Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: 'The father of the Dajjal and hid mother, will abide for thirty years without bearing a son. Then a boy shall be born to them, having one eye in which there is some defect, providing little use. His eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep.' Then the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) described his parents for us: 'His father is tall, with little fat, with a nose as if it were a beak. His mother is a bulky woman with long breasts.'" So Abu Bakrah said: "I heard about a child being born to some Jews in Al-Madinah. So Az-Zubair bin Al-'Awwam and I went until we entered upon his parents. They appeared as the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) had described them. We said: 'Do you have any children?' They said: 'We remained for thirty years without any children being born to us, then we bore a boy, having one eye in which there is some defect, providing little use. His eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep.'" He said: "So we were leaving them, when he appeared, glittering in the sunlight in a velvet garment, murmuring something. He uncovered his head and said: 'What were you saying?' We said: 'Did you hear what we were saying?' He said: 'Yes, that my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep
Dajjal's Identity: Viral Myths vs. Authentic Sunnah
What goes viral on social media vs. what the authentic texts actually say.
Dajjal is a 60-foot giant monster who can step across oceans.
Authentic hadiths describe him as a short, stocky, strongly built young man (qasir, afhaj, jasim). The Prophet ﷺ and Umar (RA) even investigated a normal-sized teenager in Madinah (Ibn Sayyad) to see if he was the Dajjal (Sahih Muslim 2930).
Dajjal is not a human being at all; he is a metaphor for AI, television, or modern Western civilization.
In Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, Dajjal is a mortal man from the children of Adam with curly hair, a blind eye, and 'K-F-R' on his forehead, whose blood will be shown on the lance of Prophet Isa (AS) at the Gate of Ludd (Sahih Muslim 2937a).
It is 100% Sahih that Dajjal's parents will be childless for 30 years and he will be born sleeping with his eyes open.
That narration in Tirmidhi (2248) is graded Da'if (weak) by Imam Ahmad, Yahya ibn Ma'in, and Shaykh al-Albani because its chain depends on the weak narrator Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an.
Frequently Asked Questions & Fact-Check
Key questions answered directly from authentic prophetic sources
Is Dajjal a mortal human being or a metaphor for modern technology/systems?
According to Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, Dajjal is a literal mortal man from the children of Adam. He eats food, walks in markets, and will be physically slain by Prophet Isa (AS) with a lance at the Gate of Ludd, who will show his blood on its tip.
Who was the Madinan teenager Ibn Sayyad? Was he the actual Dajjal?
Ibn Sayyad was a Jewish teenager in Madinah who exhibited strange psychic claims and soothsaying whispers. The Prophet ﷺ personally tested him behind date palms, but did not definitively confirm he was the Greater Dajjal. He later claimed Islam and disappeared during the Battle of al-Harrah.
What are Dajjal's authentic physical features in Sahih Hadith?
The Prophet ﷺ described him as a short, stocky, heavily built young man with reddish-fair skin, deeply curly hair, a waddling gait (afhaj), a blind flat eye and a protruding grape-like eye, with 'K-F-R' inscribed on his forehead, and completely barren/childless.
Is the hadith about Dajjal's parents being childless for 30 years authentic?
No. That narration in Jami al-Tirmidhi (2248) and Musnad Ahmad is graded Da'if (weak). Imam Ahmad, Yahya ibn Ma'in, and Shaykh al-Albani confirmed its chain is weak due to the memory defects of narrator Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an.
