The Smoke of the Last Day: Explaining Surah ad-Dukhan

Did the 'Smoke' mentioned in Surah ad-Dukhan already happen during the famine of Makkah, or is it one of the ten Major Signs of the Hour? Here is how scholars connected both views.

Executive Summary

In Surah ad-Dukhan (44:10-11), Allah commands: 'Wait for the Day when the sky brings a visible smoke that will envelop the people; this is a painful torment.' Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) and Ibn Abbas (RA) held two fascinatingly different views on this verse, and together they reveal the full picture.

1

1. The Scriptural Foundations: Surah ad-Dukhan and the Ten Major Signs

Open the Quran to Surah ad-Dukhan (Chapter 44, Verses 10-12) and read the scene Allah describes:
> 'Then wait for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke (dukhanin mubin), enveloping the people: This is a painful torment! [They will cry:] Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers!'

Now pair that verse with the famous hadith of Hudhayfah ibn Usayd al-Ghifari (RA) in Sahih Muslim (2901):
One day the Companions were sitting in the shade discussing the Final Hour. The Prophet ﷺ walked out to them and said:
> 'The Hour will never be established until you see ten signs before it...', and among the very first signs he listed were the Smoke (ad-Dukhan), the Dajjal, the Beast (ad-Dabbah), the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Isa ibn Maryam (AS), and Yajuj and Majuj.

2. The Exegetical Divergence Among the Sahaba: Ibn Mas'ud and Ibn Abbas (RA)

Here is where the story gets really interesting. Among the greatest scholars of the Companions, two different explanations emerged about the Smoke in Surah ad-Dukhan:

View 1: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA), The Hunger Haze of Makkah
In Sahih Bukhari (4821) and Sahih Muslim (2798), a storyteller in Kufa was preaching that on the Day of Resurrection a smoke will seize the breaths of the hypocrites. When Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) heard this, he got angry and explained why he disagreed:
- When the Quraysh stubbornly fought the Prophet ﷺ in Makkah, he prayed against them: 'O Allah, help me against them with seven years of famine like the seven years of Yusuf!'
- Famine struck Makkah so hard that people ate hides, bones, and carcasses. When a starving man looked up at the sky, because of extreme hunger and dehydration, he saw a smoky haze (kah كهيئة الدخان) between himself and the sky.
- Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet ﷺ and begged him to pray for rain, which was revealed in Surah ad-Dukhan.

View 2: Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, and Hudhayfah (RA), The Future End-Times Smoke
On the other hand, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abdullah ibn Abbas, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with them) held firmly that the Dukhan Mubin (clear, literal smoke) is a future Major Sign of the Hour that has not happened yet! Why? Because the verse says 'a visible/clear smoke (dukhanin mubin)' from the sky itself, not an optical illusion in the eyes of a hungry person.

3. Classical Synthesis: Harmonizing the Two Historical Manifestations

So who was right, Ibn Mas'ud (RA) or Ibn Abbas (RA)?

When you read Imam an-Nawawi (Sharh Sahih Muslim), Hafiz Ibn Kathir (Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim), Imam al-Qurtubi, and Hafiz Ibn Hajar (Fath al-Bari), they show how both Companions were actually pointing to two halves of the same truth:

  • 1. The Small Preview in Makkah: What happened to Quraysh during the Meccan famine was the immediate, metaphorical preview (dukhan al-ju', the haze of hunger) that fulfilled the Prophet's ﷺ prayer against Quraysh's arrogance.
  • 2. The Literal Global Sign Before the Hour: And because Sahih Muslim (2901) explicitly lists ad-Dukhan alongside the Dajjal, Isa (AS), and the sun rising from the west as one of the ten Major Signs of the Hour, there is also a literal, physical smoke that will cover the sky before the Day of Judgment!
📌 Why Did Ibn Mas'ud (RA) Speak So Sternly in Kufa?
Ibn Hajar explains that Ibn Mas'ud (RA) was rebuking unverified storytellers (qussas) who were inventing dramatic details without authentic chains, so he anchored them in the historical cause of revelation (sabab an-nuzul) that he personally witnessed in Makkah.

4. The Differential Impact Upon Believers and Disbelievers

What will happen when the end-times Smoke (ad-Dukhan) actually blankets the sky? In classical reports preserved by Ibn Jarir at-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA):

  • For the Believer: It will touch the believer softly, feeling like little more than a mild head cold or sniffle (ka-az-zukmah).
  • For the Disbeliever & Hypocrite: It will enter their airways and bloat them until smoke comes out of their ears and nostrils, leaving them dazed and crying out: 'Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers!' (Quran 44:12).

5. Transcending Modern Speculation: Cosmic Signs in the Hands of the Creator

Every time a volcano erupts in Iceland or NASA tracks an asteroid, social media channels flood with thumbnails: 'Is Apophis the Asteroid of Ad-Dukhan in 2029?!'

Let's apply the prophetic methodology we have learned:

  1. No Date-Setting: Anyone putting a calendar year (like 2029 or 2036) on one of the Ten Major Signs of the Hour is speaking without knowledge about the unseen (ghayb).
  2. Don't Lock Revelation to a Single Scientific Guess: Whether Allah brings about the Smoke through a cosmic event, geological eruption, or a direct miracle outside ordinary physical causes, the Quran and Sunnah did not name an asteroid or nuclear warhead, so neither should we.
  3. What Actually Matters: When the final Major Signs arrive in rapid succession, like beads falling from a cut necklace, the door of repentance closes when the sun rises from the west (Sahih Muslim 157). The time to turn back to Allah is before the sky changes.

Narrated Masruq:We were with `Abdullah and he said, "When the Prophet (ﷺ) saw the refusal of the people to accept Islam he said, "O Allah! Send (famine) years on them for (seven years) like the seven years (of famine during the time) of (Prophet) Joseph." So famine overtook them for one year and destroyed every kind of life to such an extent that the people started eating hides, carcasses and rotten dead animals. Whenever one of them looked towards the sky, he would (imagine himself to) see smoke because of hunger. So Abu Sufyan went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Muhammad! You order people to obey Allah and to keep good relations with kith and kin. No doubt the people of your tribe are dying, so please pray to Allah for them." So Allah revealed: "Then watch you For the day that The sky will bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible ... Verily! You will return (to disbelief) On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp. (44.10-16) Ibn Mas`ud added, "Al-Batsha (i.e. grasp) happened in the battle of Badr and no doubt smoke, Al-Batsha, Al-Lizam, and the verse of Surat Ar-Rum have all passed
