1. The Prophecy: Who Are the Thirty Liars (Dajjals)?

In multiple mutawatir-level thematic narrations found in Sahih al-Bukhari (3609), Sahih Muslim (157), and Jami` at-Tirmidhi (2219), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly foretold: 'The Hour will not be established until about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear, each claiming to be a messenger of Allah.' He immediately anchored this warning with the eternal theological seal: 'And I am the Seal of the Prophets, there is no prophet after me' (خاتم النبيين لا نبي بعدي). The Prophet warned the Ummah that these individuals would not merely be petty deceivers, but charismatic figures producing deceptive wonders and mass followings.

2. Scholarly Criteria: Ibn Hajar's Rule of Qualification

In Fath al-Bari (Vol. 6, p. 617), Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani clarifies an indispensable principle: 'The hadith does not refer to every single individual who ever mentally claimed prophethood, for such lunatics are countless. Rather, it specifically denotes those who attained substantial political or military power (shawka), spread widespread specious arguments (shubha), gathered large followings, and whose fitnah shook the Ummah.' Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Al-Nawawi similarly note that this number 'about thirty' (قريباً من ثلاثين) outlines the major seismic figures throughout the history of Islam leading up to the Grand Dajjal.

3. Era 1: The Claimants of the Prophet's Lifetime & The Ridda Wars

  1. Al-Aswad al-Ansi (Abhalah ibn Ka'b): Nicknamed Dhu al-Khimar (The Veiled One) in Yemen. Conquered Sana'a, slaughtered the governor Shahr, and forced his widow Azad into marriage. He was assassinated in his fortress by Fayruz al-Daylami and Azad just days before the Prophet's demise.
  2. Musaylimah al-Kadhdhab: The arch-liar of Banu Hanifah in Yamamah. Demanded half the earth from the Prophet ﷺ, authored comical pseudo-revelations ('Al-Feel', 'Al-Difda'), legalized wine, and dropped prayers. Slain at Yamamah in 12 AH by Wahshi ibn Harb and Abu Dujana.
  3. Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid al-Asadi: Claimed Gabriel visited him; routed by Khalid ibn al-Walid at Buzakha. He later sincerely repented, re-embraced Islam, became a celebrated hero under Umar (RA), and was martyred at Nahavand.
  4. Sajah bint al-Harith: Arab Christian soothsayer from Banu Tamim. Formed a massive military coalition, politically married Musaylimah, and dropped morning and night prayers as dowry. Later repented and died a Muslim in Basra.
  5. Laqit ibn Malik al-Azdi (Dhu al-Taj): Crowned himself prophet-king of Oman; defeated and killed at the Battle of Dibba in 11 AH.

4. Era 2: The Umayyad & Early Marwanid Claimants

  1. Al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd al-Thaqafi: Took control of Kufa under the banner of avenging Imam Husayn, but progressively claimed revelation, stating Gabriel brought him messages in a draped chair. Identified directly by Asma bint Abi Bakr as the 'Kadhdhab of Thaqif' prophesied in Sahih Muslim 2545. Slain in 67 AH by Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr.
  2. Al-Harith ibn Sa'id al-Kadhdhab: Ascetic in Damascus deceived by Satanic visions. Used sleight-of-hand illusions (summer fruits in winter, brass locusts). Cross-examined by Islamic scholars under Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and executed in 80 AH.
  3. Bayyan ibn Sam'an al-Nahdi: Claimed divinity and that Surah Ali 'Imran (3:138: 'Hatha bayanun lin-nas') named him as prophet. Burned at the stake in Kufa (119 AH) by Governor Khalid al-Qasri.
  4. Al-Mughirah ibn Sa'id al-Ijli: Extremist ghali in Kufa who claimed God had bodily limbs and that he could resurrect the dead; executed alongside Bayyan.
5

5. Era 3: The Abbasid Era & Medieval Millenarian Rebels

  1. Abu Mansur al-Ijli (Al-Kisf): Claimed he was taken to heaven, Allah patted his head, and called him the 'Kisf' (heavenly fragment of Surah At-Tur 52:44). Sanctified assassinating Muslims by strangulation. Executed in Kufa.
  2. Salih ibn Tarif al-Barghawata: Founded the Barghawata confederacy in Morocco (~127 AH). Proclaimed himself Mahdi-Prophet, authored an 80-surah Berber Quran, altered prayer to ten daily times, and changed fasting to Rajab.
  3. Al-Muqanna' al-Khurasani (Hashim ibn Hakim): The 'Veiled Prophet of Khurasan'. Wore a golden mask claiming no mortal could behold his radiant divine countenance. Engineered the illusion of 'The Moon of Nakhshab'. Besieged in 163 AH, he leaped into a vat of boiling chemical fire.
  4. Ustad Sis: Claimed prophethood in Herat (150 AH) commanding 300,000 insurgents before defeat by the Abbasids.
  5. Babak Khorramdin: Led the neo-Mazdakite Khurramite rebellion in Azerbaijan (201-222 AH) slaughtering tens of thousands before execution in Samarra.
  6. Ali ibn Muhammad (Leader of Zanj): Instigated the 14-year Zanj rebellion in Basra claiming divine revelation and Alid lineage, massacring vast populations.
  7. Hamdan Qarmat: Founded the Qarmatians, claiming a new revelation superseding Islam. His cult eventually sacked Makkah in 317 AH and stole the Black Stone for 22 years.
  8. Al-Shalmaghani (Ibn Abi al-Azaqir): Scholar turned heretic claiming God incarnated into prophets through ages; executed in Baghdad (322 AH).
  9. Abu al-Tayyib al-Mutanabbi: The legendary poet who in his youth claimed prophethood in the Syrian desert, giving him his permanent moniker ('The Prophet Claimant'); he repented and abandoned it.
  10. Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah: Fatimid ruler of Cairo whose court flatterers (Hamza and Darazi) proclaimed him divine incarnation, birthing the Druze creed.

6. Era 4 & 5: The Post-Mongol & Modern Colonial Claimants

  1. Fadlullah Astarabadi: Founder of Hurufism (796 AH) claiming divine letters superseded Shariah; executed by Timur's son Miran Shah.
  2. Mahmud Pasikhani: Founder of Nuqtavi movement in Persia claiming Islam had ended.
  3. Sayyid Muhammad Jaunpuri: Founder of the Mahdavia movement in India (d. 910 AH) whose followers elevated him to prophetic authority.
  4. Ali Muhammad Shirazi (The Bab): Founder of Babism in Iran (1819-1850). Escalated from Bab to Mahdi, and finally to an independent prophet bringing the 'Bayan', which abolished the Quran and Islamic prayer. Executed by firing squad in Tabriz.
  5. Baha'u'llah (Husayn Ali Nuri): Successor to the Bab and founder of the Bahá'í Faith (1817-1892). Claimed to be the supreme Manifestation of God, authored the Kitab-i-Aqdas, abolished Islamic law, and established Acre as the new Qiblah.
  6. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani: Founder of the Ahmadiyya/Qadiani movement in Punjab (1835-1908). Gradually escalated from debater to Promised Messiah, and finally claimed direct 'zilli' and 'buroozi' prophethood with revelation, declaring all rejecting him as disbelievers. Unanimously declared non-Muslim by global Islamic bodies (Rabita al-Alam al-Islami 1974).
  7. Rashad Khalifa: Egyptian-American biochemist in Tucson who propagated the 'Code 19' mathematical theory, subsequently declared himself the 'Messenger of the Covenant', deleted the last two verses of Surah At-Tawbah, and discarded all Hadith. Assassinated in 1990.
  8. Noble Drew Ali & Elijah Muhammad: Claimants in the United States who founded the Moorish Science Temple and Nation of Islam, claiming specific prophet/messenger status.
  9. Mahmud Muhammad Taha (Sudan, d. 1985): Claimed the 'Second Message of Islam', calling the Madani Quran obsolete. Executed for apostasy.
  10. Lia Eden (Indonesia, 1947-2021): Claimed direct revelations from Gabriel, declared herself the Holy Spirit, imprisoned for blasphemy.
  11. Ahmad al-Hasan (Iraq, post-2003): Founder of 'Ansar al-Mahdi', claiming to be an infallible inspired messenger and son of the 12th Imam.

7. The Four Women Claimants Prophesied in the Sunnah

In Musnad Ahmad (23447), the Prophet ﷺ highlighted an astonishingly specific detail: 'In my Ummah there will be twenty-seven liars and Dajjals, among them four women, and I am the seal of the prophets, there is no prophet after me.' Historically, the female claimants include:
1. Sajah bint al-Harith (The primary historic female claimant who mobilized armies, later repented).
2. Saraha / Umm Salmah (During the early Umayyad/Abbasid turmoil in Iraq).
3. Salma of Sudan (Early 20th century).
4. Lia Eden (Lia Aminuddin of Indonesia, who declared revelations in the 1990s and 2000s).
This exact prophetic specification of female false prophets stands as an undeniable miracle of Prophetic foresight.

8. The Ultimate Climax: From Minor Dajjals to the Grand False Messiah

Classical commentators note that these thirty claimants are termed 'Dajjaloon' (little Dajjals) because they pave the psychological and theological groundwork for the ultimate, grandest deceiver: Al-Masih ad-Dajjal. While these thirty minor claimants blasphemed by claiming prophethood (Nubuwwah), the Grand Dajjal will cross the final boundary of existential kufr by claiming divinity and lordship (Rububiyyah / Divinity), proclaiming to mankind: 'I am your lord'. The Prophet ﷺ taught that recognizing the seal of prophethood protects the believer from the small deceivers, which in turn immunizes the soul against the grand deception of the final hour.

Myth vs. Fact: The Seal of Prophethood

Contrasting popular internet assertions with verified prophetic hadiths.

❌ Claim #1

The hadith of thirty liars means only thirty individual people would ever utter a claim to prophethood.

✅ Scriptural Fact

Scholars like Ibn Hajar explain that mentally ill individuals are countless; the hadith specifically counts the ~30 monumental claimants who founded mass religious-political movements, gathered armies, or established lasting deviant sects.

❌ Claim #2

All historical claimants remained doomed apostates who died in disbelief.

✅ Scriptural Fact

Historically documented claimants like Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid and Sajah bint al-Harith sincerely repented, returned to orthodox Islam, and Tulayhah died as a celebrated martyr at Nahavand under Umar (RA).

❌ Claim #3

A non-legislative (ghayr-tashri'i) or shadow (buroozi) prophet can still appear after Muhammad ﷺ.

✅ Scriptural Fact

The Prophet declared categorical negation: 'La nabiya ba'di' (There is no prophet after me). In Arabic syntax, the 'La' of absolute category negation (La al-Nafiyah lil-Jins) obliterates all sub-categories of prophethood without exception.
