As if you envy me with them? By the One in whose hand is my soul, for me to have cleaned my hands from the dust of their graves is more beloved to me than for the nest of this ferret to collapse and its eggs to be broken.

How are you when there is a temptation in which the best people are all rich and hidden? Be like a son in labour, with no milk for him to be milked, nor a ride for him to ride

Ali said that he did not do what he did, Ammar said that he did not do what he did, Talha said that he did not do what he did, and Al-Zubair said that he did not do what he did. They descended on a people who were wearing their Qur’an, the people of the afterlife, and they will disperse among them.

Ibn Al-Mubarak told us, on the authority of Issa bin Omar, who said: I heard a sheikh, speaking to Amr bin Murrah, who said: Abdullah bin Amr said, and I did not see him referring to anyone other than him: “I was reading this verse {Indeed, you are dead and they are dead, then on the Day of Resurrection you will dispute with your Lord} [Az-Zumar: 31] and I saw that it was among the People of the Book, until some of us restrained each other’s faces with swords, so we knew that it was among us.”

Ibn al-Mubarak told us, on the authority of Yazid ibn Ibrahim, on the authority of al-Hasan, in the Almighty’s saying: {And fear a trial that will not strike those of you who have wronged in particular} [Al-Anfal: 25]. He said: By Allah, people knew when it was revealed that a group would be assigned to them.

He did not entrust me with a covenant regarding this matter that he did not entrust to the people, but the people attacked Othman, (may Allah be pleased with him), and killed him. They were worse in deed and worse in deed than me, so I saw that I had more right to it, so I stood firm in it. Allah knows whether we were wrong or right.

What was entrusted to us in the Emirate is a covenant that we should adhere to, but it is something that I have seen. If it is right, it is from Allah, and if it is wrong, then it is from ourselves.
