About the Author

Abu Marwan Abd al-Malik ibn Habib ibn Habib al-Sulami al-Ilbiri al-Qurtubi (174 - 238 AH / 790 - 853 CE) was the preeminent Maliki jurist, historian, and scholar of letters in al-Andalus during the Emirate of Abd al-Rahman II. While celebrated as the 'Scholar of al-Andalus' in fiqh and adab, classical hadith critics (including Ibn Ma'in, Abu Zur'ah, and al-Dhahabi) noted that he was lenient in transmission and lacked rigorous hadith criticism. Consequently, his monographs are valued for their early historical transmission rather than as standalone legal proof.
