shadow [ka-annahu al-tallu aw al-zill])" - the scholars said: The more authentic reading is "al-tall" with the undotted ta', meaning a fine dew, which harmonizes with the other hadith stating that it resembles the semen of men. The narrator's statement: "(that is the Day when the Shin will be laid bare)" - the scholars explained: Its meaning, along with the Quranic verse "the Day the Shin shall be laid bare" [al-Qalam: 42], signifies a day when immense hardship, terror, and momentous calamity are unveiled and made manifest. It is said in classical Arabic idiom: "The battle uncovered its shin" when warfare intensifies; its origin stems from a person rolling up the garment from his shins with agile resolve when throwing himself into a formidable endeavor.
