Commentary on Hadith [2942]

[2942] It is pronounced with fat-hah on the jim and doubling of the sin:

"al-Jassāsah" with the first undotted sin. It was said that it was named thus because of its spying out intelligence (tajassus al-akhbar) for the Dajjal. It has been transmitted on the authority of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As that this is the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard) mentioned in the Quran. The narration: "(On the authority of Fatimah bint Qays who said: I was married to Ibn al-Mughirah, who was among the finest youths of Quraysh at that time, and he was stricken in the early jihad with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ); so when I became a widow, 'Abd al-Rahman proposed to me)" - the meaning of "ta'ayyamtu" is: I became an ayyim, which is a woman who has no husband. The scholars said: Her statement "he was stricken" does not mean he was slain in jihad alongside the Prophet (ﷺ);
