...and it was an idol that Daws used to worship during the Jahiliyyah in Tabalah). As for his saying 'alyat', it is pronounced with a fathah on the hamzah and the lam (alyat), meaning their buttocks, which is the plural of 'alyah', analogous to jafnah and jafanat. What is meant is that they will shake while circumambulating around Dhu al-Khalasah; that is, they will apostatize and revert to idol worship and the veneration of false deities. As for 'Tabalah', it is pronounced with a fathah on the ta followed by an unvowelled, light ba; it is a locality in Yemen. It is not the Tabalah about which the proverb is coined: 'Easier for al-Hajjaj than Tabalah,' because that one is in al-Ta'if. As for 'Dhu al-Khalasah', it is pronounced with a fathah on the kha and the lam; this is the famous vocalization. Al-Qadi narrated three variants regarding it in al-Sharh and al-Mashariq: the first is this one, the second is with a dammah on the kha (Dhu al-Khulasah), and the third is with a fathah on the kha and a sukun on the lam (Dhu al-Khalsah). Scholars stated: it was an idol temple in the territory of Daws.
