...this warfare. Others held that it is metaphorical, intending absolute abandonment of combat; the former view is more sound. This hadith, along with the narrations before and after it, constitutes the proof for those who deem combat impermissible in times of tribulation under all circumstances. The scholars differed regarding fighting during tribulations: One group held that one must never fight during internal Muslim strife; even if assailants breach his home seeking his life, he is not permitted to defend himself because the assailant may hold a misinterpretation. This is the school of the Companion Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and others. Ibn 'Umar and 'Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) and others said: He must not enter into it, but if he is targeted, he may defend himself. Both of these positions agree on refraining from entering into any civil strife in Islam. On the other hand, the vast majority of the Companions, the Successors, and the general body of Islamic scholars stated that it is obligatory to support the party of truth during tribulations and stand with them in combating the transgressors, just as Allah Almighty declared: "Fight against the one that oppresses until it complies with Allah's command" (al-Hujurat: 9). This is the correct view. The inhibitory hadiths are interpreted as applying to whoever cannot discern the truthful faction, or to two oppressive factions neither of which possesses a valid legal interpretation. Had it been as the first group asserted, corruption would have prevailed and rebels and purveyors of falsehood would have run rampant. And Allah knows best.
