He said: It is also correct that that which is introduced by "rubba" does not necessarily denote a past meaning; rather, it is permissible for it to denote past, present, or future. In this hadith, both present and future are conjoined, and textual proofs for the past are abundant; this is a summary of his words. As for introducing "rubba" with the vocative particle in the transmission of Ibn al-Mubarak, it was said that the vocative noun is omitted, and the implied construction is: "O listeners!" His statement: "'ariyatun fi al-akhirah (naked in the Hereafter)" - 'Iyad said: The majority read it in the genitive ('ariyatin) as a descriptive adjective qualifying the noun governed in the genitive by "rubba". Others said: It is preferable to read it in the nominative ('ariyatun) by implying an omitted subject (mubtada'), so that the sentence functions as an adjective clause, meaning: "she is naked," and the verb to which "rubba" is syntactically attached is omitted. Al-Suhayli said: It is preferable to read it in the genitive as an adjective, because "rubba" is a preposition that obligatorily occupies the head of the sentence, and this is the view of Sibawayh; whereas according to al-Kisa'i, it is a noun functioning as a subject, and the nominative is its predicate, and to this view some of our teachers inclined. Scholars differed regarding the intended meaning of his statement "clothed and naked" according to several perspectives: First: Clothed in this world with garments on account of wealth, but naked in the Hereafter of divine reward due to the lack of righteous deeds in this worldly life. Second: Clothed with garments, yet they are thin and transparent, failing to conceal her nakedness ('awrah); consequently, she is punished in the Hereafter with exposed nakedness as a direct retribution for that. Third: Clothed with the blessings and favors of Allah, but naked of gratitude (shukr), whose fruit manifests in the Hereafter as divine reward. Fourth: Clothed upon her body, but she fastens her veil tightly from behind, causing her chest to be exposed; thus she becomes effectively naked and is punished in the Hereafter. Fifth: Clothed with the honorific robe of marriage to a righteous man, yet naked in the Hereafter of righteous deeds, so that her husband's piety will avail her nothing, just as Allah the Exalted said: {There will be no relationships between them} [Al-Mu'minun: 101]. This last explanation was mentioned by al-Tibi, who deemed it weightier due to its suitability to the context; and even though the expression was uttered concerning the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ), the consideration is given to the generality of the wording. Al-Dawudi preceded him with something similar, stating: "Clothed in worldly nobility on account of being people of distinction, and naked on the Day of Resurrection"; and he added: "It is also possible that what is meant is naked in the Fire." Ibn Battal said: "In this hadith, it is demonstrated that the conquests and opening of treasures give rise to the tribulation of wealth, such that people compete over it, leading to armed conflict; or that one acts stingily with it, thereby withholding obligatory rights; or that its possessor becomes arrogant and recklessly extravagant. Therefore, the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to warn his wives against all of that, and likewise all others whom this teaching reaches. And by his statement 'Who will awaken,' he intended some of his attendants, just as he said on the Day of the Trench: 'Who will bring me news of the enemy?' intending his Companions, though in the latter instance the one who stepped forward was identified, as previously mentioned, whereas here he was not named." In the hadith, there is a strong recommendation to supplicate and beseech Allah humbly upon the descent of tribulations, particularly during the night, hoping for the hour of acceptance so that the affliction may be lifted or that the supplicant and those prayed for may be granted safety. And with Allah lies all success.
