...'Bite onto it with your molar teeth.' The first interpretation is supported by his saying in the other hadith: 'For if you die while biting upon a tree root, it is better for you than following any of them.' Ibn Battal said: 'This contains proof for the majority of jurists regarding the obligation of adhering to the unified body of Muslims and refraining from rebellion against unjust rulers. This is because he described the latter group as callers at the gates of Hellfire, and he did not say regarding them "you recognize and disapprove" as he said regarding the earlier ones; and they would not be described as such unless they were upon falsehood; yet despite that, he commanded adhering to the unified body (al-Jama'ah).' Al-Tabari said: 'Scholars differed regarding this command and regarding what constitutes "al-Jama'ah". A group held that the command denotes an obligation and that al-Jama'ah refers to the overwhelming majority (al-sawad al-a'zam).' Then he narrated from Muhammad ibn Sirin from Abu Mas'ud that when 'Uthman was assassinated, he advised someone who asked him: 'Adhere to the Jama'ah, for Allah would never unite the Ummah of Muhammad upon misguidance.' Another group held that what is meant by al-Jama'ah is the Companions specifically, to the exclusion of those who came after them. Yet another group held that what is meant by them is the people of religious knowledge, because Allah made them a proof over creation and people follow them in religious affairs. Al-Tabari said: 'The correct view is that what is intended by the report is adhering to the community that is in obedience to the leader upon whose governance they have united; whoever breaks his pledge of allegiance has departed from the Jama'ah.' He added: 'The hadith also indicates that whenever the people have no leader (imam) and they splinter into factions, one should not follow anyone in their division, and should withdraw from all of them if able to do so, out of fear of falling into evil. It is upon this principle that the other hadiths are understood, and through it what appears contradictory among them is reconciled, which is also supported by the previously mentioned narration of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Qurt.' Ibn Abi Jamrah said: 'In this hadith is an illustration of Allah's divine wisdom regarding His servants, how He placed each of them in what He willed: He made beloved to most Companions asking about the avenues of good so that they could act upon them and convey them to others, while He made beloved to Hudhayfah asking about evil so that he could avoid it and be a means of averting it from those for whom Allah willed salvation. In it also is evidence of the Prophet's (ﷺ) magnanimity and broadness of chest, and his comprehensive knowledge of all facets of wisdom, such that he answered each questioner with what suited him. From it is derived that whenever someone has something made beloved to him, he excels in it beyond others; hence Hudhayfah was the keeper of the secret that no one else knew, to the extent that he was uniquely entrusted with the names of the hypocrites and with many future events. From it is also derived that among the etiquettes of teaching is to instruct the student in the branches of permissible knowledge toward which he shows a natural inclination, as that makes him more likely to comprehend it quickly and excel in it; that everything leading to the path of good is termed good, and likewise the reverse; and from it is derived the censure of whoever invents a foundation for religion contrary to the Book and the Sunnah, making the two subordinate to that invented foundation. In it also is the obligation of refuting falsehood and everything that contradicts the Prophetic guidance, regardless of who uttered it, whether of high or low station.'
That is, the people of the two. What is meant by 'al-sawad' (with fathah on the sin and a light, non-geminate waw) is persons or crowds. It has been narrated from Ibn Mas'ud as a raised (marfu') hadith: 'Whoever increases the numbers of a people is one of them, and whoever is pleased with the deed of a people...'
