Chapter 14: Fleeing to the Desert and Isolation During Times of Strife

Chapter 14: Fleeing to the Desert and Isolation During Times of Strife

In this chapter, he cited three hadiths. The first he recorded through two routes. In the commentary on the hadith of Usamah at the beginning of 'Kitab al-Fitan', I detailed the method of reconciling between it and his statement (ﷺ): "Indeed, I see trials falling through the spaces between your homes," which was addressed directly to the people of Madinah.

[7092] His statement: "From the Prophet (ﷺ) that he stood beside the pulpit" - in the narration of 'Abd al-Razzaq from Ma'mar in al-Tirmidhi: that the Prophet (ﷺ) stood upon the pulpit. In the narration of Shu'ayb from al-Zuhri, as previously cited in the Merits of Quraysh through his chain to Ibn 'Umar: the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood delivering a sermon and pointed his hand toward the East. His statement: "Tribulation is right here" - al-Khattabi stated: The East of Madinah is Najd; fundamentally, Najd denotes elevated ground, which is the antonym of al-Ghawr (lowlands). Tihamah is entirely lowland, and Makkah is part of Tihamah. He added: The East of Madinah is Iraq, which is physically higher in elevation than Madinah. He continued: Others observed that Najd lies to the East; whoever is in Madinah finds his Najd to be the desert of Iraq and its peripheries, which is the East for the inhabitants of Madinah. The origin of 'Najd' is whatever is elevated of the earth, and the basalt plains (al-hirar) are higher than other lands, while al-Ghawr is the depressed depression. Whatever descends from the mountains of the Hijaz eastward is Najd, and whatever slopes toward the sea is Tihamah, while Yemen is entirely of the lowlands. It was also said that the intended tribulation is the intense internal warfare that erupted there, beginning with the assassination of 'Uthman, followed by the Battle of the Camel, Siffin, and the emergence of the Kharijite renegades in the land of Iraq to the East, fracturing the Muslim body. Further elaboration will follow in the next chapter. His statement: "From where the horn of Satan emerges" - meaning his head. It is also explained as his following, or his faction. Al-Dawudi noted: The horn of Satan refers to his partisan followers. Others explained it as the innovations, heretical sects, and manifestations of disbelief that arise from the East. In the upcoming narration of Ibn 'Awn: "And from there the horn of Satan rises," referring to the orientation of sunrise. Satan here refers either to Iblis himself or the species of devils. The Second Hadith:

[7094] His statement: "From Ibn 'Awn" - he is 'Abdullah ibn 'Awn, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar who said: The Prophet (ﷺ) supplicated: "O Allah, bless us in our Sham..." to the end of the hadith. Thus it was recorded via 'Ali ibn 'Abdullah from Azhar al-Samman. Al-Tirmidhi extracted it via Bishr ibn Adam, grandson of Azhar al-Samman, from Azhar: Ibn 'Awn narrated to us from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ascended the pulpit and said: "O Allah, bless us in our Makkah, O Allah, bless us in our Madinah, O Allah, bless us in our Sham, and in our Sa' and our Mudd!" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, and in our Iraq?" He turned away from him. He repeated the supplication three times, and every time the man said: "And in our Iraq?" while he turned away from him. Then he said: "Therein are earthquakes and tribulations, and from there the horn of Satan rises." Ahmad recorded via 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Ata' from Nafi' similarly, with the addition: "Nine tenths of evil are therein." In another narration with Ahmad via Usamah ibn Zayd from Nafi': he said: "I think he said: Earthquakes and tribulations, or tribulations and earthquakes, and from there rises the horn of Satan." His statement: "Therein are earthquakes and tribulations, and from it - or he said: out of it rises the horn of Satan" - this was doubt on the part of the narrator, but the meaning is identical. 'Zalazil' is the plural of zalzalah, meaning the trembling and convulsion of the earth, as in the divine verse: "When the earth is shaken with its earthquake." By tribulations (fitan) here is meant trials, hardships, and the catalysts of sectarian splintering, such as the emergence of the Kharijites, the Rawafid Shi'a, the Qadariyyah, the Mu'tazilah, the Jahmiyyah, and other deviant sects that originated from the direction of Iraq and the East. His statement regarding the horn of Satan was explained above. Al-Khattabi related that some scholars maintained: He did not pray for Iraq because its inhabitants would later murder al-Husayn, betray him, abandon him, and engage in excessive veneration at his gravesite; and that was known to the Prophet (ﷺ) through divine revelation, so he refrained from praying for them on that account. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr remarked: He did not pray for Iraq because it was the seat of apostasy and disbelief, remaining distant from blessing. Others suggested that the horn of Satan here specifically refers to Musaylamah the Liar, whose rebellion erupted from al-Yamamah, which is part of Najd; he spearheaded the apostasy, claimed false prophethood, and misled multitudes. However, this does not exclude other instigators of evil from that direction. Al-Khattabi stated: Najd is to the East, and for one in Madinah, his Najd is the desert of Iraq and its surroundings, which is the East for Madinah's people. Al-Kirmani commented: The horn of Satan is his party and adherents; similarly the horn of the sun is the very first ray that emerges from it. The comparison arises because harshness, coarseness, and severe dispositions predominate among the eastern peoples, as the Prophet (ﷺ) noted: "Harshness and pride belong to the uncouth camel-herders and farmers." It is also said that when the sun rises, Satan aligns himself so that it appears between his two horns, so that sun-worshipers prostrate to him at that moment; hence the Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited prayer at sunrise and sunset to avoid imitating them. Qadi 'Iyad remarked: The horn of a thing is its flank and strength, denoting the strength and pervasive spread of Satan in that region. Ibn al-'Arabi noted: The horn of the sun is its first burst of light, while the horn of an animal is what rises on its head; he thus likened Satan's movement at sunrise to an animal raising its horns. It was also said: Satan's horn is his generation and nation, for each generation is termed a 'qarn'. And Allah knows best.
