In Sahih Muslim, it is narrated on the authority of Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Guarding the frontier for a day and a night is better than fasting for a whole month and standing in prayer throughout it. And if he dies, the deeds that he used to perform continue to be credited to him, his provision is granted to him, and he is secured from the examiner (the tester of the grave)." Others also recorded it with the addition: "and he is protected from the punishment of the grave."

At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud recorded a hadith conveying a similar meaning from the hadith of Fadalah ibn 'Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (ﷺ), and it has been narrated through other chains of transmission as well.

An-Nasa'i recorded from the hadith of Rashid ibn Sa'd, from a man among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), that a man asked: "O Messenger of Allah, why is it that the believers are tested in their graves except for the martyr?" He (ﷺ) replied: "The gleaming of swords above his head is sufficient as a trial for him."

Mujalid narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Muntashir, from Rib'i, from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "Indeed, there is an accounting in the grave and an accounting on the Day of Resurrection; so whoever is subjected to reckoning on the Day of Resurrection will be punished."

Ibn 'Ajlan narrated from 'Awn ibn 'Abdullah, who said: "It is said: When the servant is placed into his grave, he is questioned concerning his prayer as the very first thing he is asked about. If his prayer is deemed acceptable, the rest of his deeds are examined; but if it is not accepted, none of his subsequent deeds will even be looked at."
