Because of this. And perhaps the Prophet (ﷺ) initially forbade testifying that the deceased children of Muslims are definitely in Paradise before he was divinely informed of that, because bearing witness to such a matter requires definite knowledge, and then he was informed of it, so he made it known; and Allah knows best.

The Second Category: The Legally Accountable Believers Other Than the Martyrs

Scholars, both ancient and contemporary, have differed concerning them. What is explicitly transmitted from Imam Ahmad is that the souls of the believers are in Paradise. Al-Khallal mentioned this in Kitab al-Sunnah from more than one narrator from Hanbal, who said: I heard Abu 'Abdillah say: "The souls of the believers are in Paradise." And Hanbal said in another place: "The souls of the believers are in Paradise, while the souls of the disbelievers are in the Fire, and the bodies are in the earth; Allah punishes whom He wills and shows mercy to whom He wills."

Abu 'Abdillah said: "And we do not say that they will perish; rather, according to Allah's knowledge, they are both everlasting, and Allah fulfills His decree in them. We ask Allah for steadfastness, and that He does not let our hearts deviate after He has guided us."

His statement: "And we do not say that they will perish" refers to Paradise and Hellfire. Indeed, in the earlier part of the narration from Hanbal, Abu 'Abdillah recounted the story of Dirar and his mention of the scholars' disagreement regarding whether Paradise and Hellfire have already been created, and that the judge declared Dirar's blood lawful to be shed, which led him to go into hiding until he died, and that Abu 'Abdillah said: "This is disbelief," meaning the claim that both of them will only be created later.

Hanbal said: And I asked Abu 'Abdillah about someone who says: "Even if they were created, they are bound to perish." Then he mentioned this response from Ahmad.

It is not valid to claim that Ahmad only negated annihilation from both of them collectively (such that it might allow the interpretation that Paradise alone does not perish), because what follows this invalidates such an interpretation, namely his saying: "Rather, according to Allah's knowledge, they are both everlasting." This refutes that supposition and misconception, and establishes perpetual existence for both of them together. This is akin to saying: "Zayd and 'Amr do not know"; this might conceivably imply the negation of knowledge from both collectively rather than each individually, but if you then say: "Rather, they are both ignorant," that possibility disappears, and ignorance is established for both of them. Moreover, a negation is never applied to two things with the intention of negating only their collective conjunction unless there is contextual clarification indicating that; but when stated unconditionally, it cannot be interpreted that way, nor is it permissible to use it ambiguously, just as it is not said: "Paradise and the Fire do not endure," nor is it said: "The Creator is Allah..."
