Some of What Has Been Reported Regarding the Causes of the Punishment of the Grave

وفي الصحيحين عن ابن عباس أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مر بقبرين فقال: "إنهما ليعذبان وما يعذبان في كبير أما أحدهما فكان لا يستبرئ من البول وأما الآخر فكان يمشي بالنميمة" ثم أخذ جريدة رطبة فشقها باثنتين ثم غرز على كل قبر منهما واحدة قالوا لم فعلت هذا يا رسول الله قال: "لعله يخفف عنهما ما لم ييبسا" 4.

সহীহাইনে (সহীহ বুখারী ও সহীহ মুসলিম) ইবনে আব্বাস (রাদিয়াল্লাহু আনহুমা) থেকে বর্ণিত রয়েছে যে, নবী (ﷺ) দুটি কবরের পাশ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন, তখন তিনি বললেন: "নিশ্চয়ই তাদের উভয়কে শাস্তি দেওয়া হচ্ছে, আর তাদের এমন কোনো বিষয়ের জন্য শাস্তি দেওয়া হচ্ছে না যা থেকে বেঁচে থাকা কঠিন ছিল। তাদের একজন প্রস্রাবের ছিটা থেকে সতর্কতা অবলম্বন করত না, আর অন্যজন চোগলখোরি করে বেড়াত।" অতঃপর তিনি একটি তাজা খেজুরের ডাল নিলেন এবং তা দুই ভাগে চিরে প্রতিটি কবরে একটি করে পুঁতে দিলেন। সাহাবীগণ আরজ করলেন, "হে আল্লাহর রাসুল! আপনি কেন এমন করলেন?" তিনি ইরশাদ করলেন: "আশা করা যায়, যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত এ দুটি শুকিয়ে না যাবে, ততক্ষণ তাদের শাস্তি কিছুটা লাঘব করা হবে।"

In the two Sahihs, it is narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Prophet (ﷺ) passed by two graves and said: "Indeed, they are being punished, and they are not being punished for something difficult to avoid. As for one of them, he did not shield himself from urine, and as for the other, he used to walk about spreading malicious gossip." Then he took a moist palm stalk, split it in two, and planted one piece upon each grave. They asked: "Why have you done this, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Perhaps their punishment may be lightened as long as these do not dry up."
