And others said: This is the view of the people of innovation, and the numerous texts proving the persistence of souls after their separation from bodies refute and invalidate it. However, some later scholars imagined that souls die upon the first blow of the Trumpet, seeking evidence from the words of Allah the Exalted: "And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will swoon (or die), except whom Allah wills" [az-Zumar: 68]. Others refuted this, saying: What is intended is only that those who have not yet died prior to that will die. Nonetheless, it was narrated from a group of the Salaf regarding His words, "except whom Allah wills," that the exempted ones are the martyrs. This was narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (ﷺ) in the lengthy hadith of the Trumpet (Sur), and through another chain that is better than the chain of the hadith of the Trumpet. This indicates that the martyrs possess a life in which they share attributes with the living, and the like of this has also been said regarding the Prophets.

A group of scholars, including al-Bayhaqi and Abu al-Abbas al-Qurtubi, interpreted according to this the statement of the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding the words of Allah the Exalted: "And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will swoon, except whom Allah wills; then it will be blown a second time": "I will be the first to be resurrected, and behold, Moses will be holding onto the Throne, and I will not know whether he was recompensed for his swooning at Mount Tur, or was resurrected before me." And in one narration: "or he was among those whom Allah exempted." Because the life of the Prophets is undoubtedly more complete than the life of the martyrs, the ruling of the living applies to them as well, and they will swoon along with the living at that time, but it will be a swooning of unconsciousness, not a swooning of death, except for Moses, regarding whom there was hesitation as to whether he swooned or was among those whom Allah exempted, peace and blessings be upon him inevitably; so how could the Prophet (ﷺ) hesitate in all of that?!

The difference between the life of the martyrs and that of other believers whose souls are in Paradise is from two aspects:

The first: Bodies are created for the souls of the martyrs, or they inhabit the birds in whose crops they reside, so that their bliss may thereby be made complete and be more perfect than the bliss of souls detached from bodies. For the martyrs sacrificed their bodies to be slain in the cause of Allah, so they were compensated with these bodies in the Barzakh.

The second: They are provided for directly from Paradise, whereas the same has not been established in the right of others. It has been reported that they (the souls of the believers) graze/cling to the trees of Paradise. It is narrated as 'ya'laqu' (with a fatha on the lam) and 'yu'laqu' (with a dammah), and it was said: Both carry the same meaning and refer to eating from the trees. Ibn Abd al-Barr said: It is also said that the narration with the dammah signifies eating, while the narration...
