"...truth." This supports the narration of the one who reported: "They indeed hear," and does not contradict it. For if it is permissible for the deceased to have knowledge, it is equally permissible for them to hear, because death is incompatible with knowledge just as it is incompatible with hearing and sight. Thus, if death were an impediment to one of these faculties, it would be an impediment to all of them.
Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani narrated with his chain of transmission from 'Ubayd ibn Marzuq, who said: There was a woman in Madinah known as Umm Mihjan who used to sweep the mosque. She passed away, and the Prophet (ﷺ) was not informed of her death. Later, he passed by her grave and asked, "Whose grave is this?" They replied, "Umm Mihjan." He asked, "The one who used to sweep the mosque?" They replied, "Yes." So he lined up the people in rows and offered the funeral prayer over her. Then he asked, "Which deed did you find to be the most virtuous?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, does she hear?" He replied, "You do not hear any better than she does." It was mentioned that she answered him: "Sweeping the mosque." This narration is mursal (hurriedly transmitted with an omitted link).
As for the claim that this was exclusively specific to the speech of the Prophet (ﷺ), that is not so. It is firmly established in the Two Sahihs that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Indeed, when the servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn away, he surely hears the clatter of their sandals." This has been cited previously, and we shall mention the ahadith reported regarding the dead hearing the greetings of those who greet them later, if Allah wills.
Regarding the words of Allah, the Exalted: "Indeed, you cannot make the dead hear" [al-Naml: 80], and His words: "And you cannot make those in the graves hear" [Fatir: 22], the word "hearing" (al-sama') can refer to perceiving speech and comprehending it, and it can also refer to benefiting from it and responding to it. What is intended by these verses is the negation of the latter meaning, not the former, for they appear in the context of addressing the disbelievers who do not respond to guidance or faith when they are called to it. This is just as Allah, the Exalted, said: "And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear" [al-A'raf: 179]. This verse negates hearing and sight from them because a faculty may be negated due to the absence of its benefit and fruit. Thus, when a person does not benefit from what he hears and sees, it is as though he neither hears nor sees. The hearing of the dead is of this nature, as is the hearing of the disbelievers toward those who invite them to faith and guidance. Furthermore, the statement of Qatadah regarding the people of the well (of Badr), "Allah brought them back to life so that they could hear him," indicates that the deceased does not hear speech except after the soul has been returned to his body, as explicitly stated in the lengthy hadith of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib from the Prophet (ﷺ), portions of which were cited earlier, wherein it is mentioned regarding the disbeliever: "and his soul is returned to his body."
