"Yes, may Allah preserve him as a brother and as a successor! What an excellent brother, what an excellent successor, and what an excellent arrival he has arrived!" He said: "So he entered, and suddenly he came upon a man of complete stature, not lacking anything from his physical creation as people lack. To his right was a door from which a pleasant fragrance emerged, and to his left was a door from which a foul odor emerged. When he looked to his right, he laughed and rejoiced, and when he looked to his left, he wept and grieved. The door to his right was the gate of Paradise; whenever he saw those of his offspring entering Paradise, he laughed and rejoiced. And the door to his left was Hellfire; whenever he saw those of his offspring entering Hellfire, he wept." He then mentioned the narration. It was recorded in its entirety by al-Bazzar in his Musnad, Abu Bakr al-Khallal, and more than one scholar. In it is an explicit statement that the souls of his offspring are in Paradise and Hell, and that he gazes at the people of Paradise through a door to his right and at the people of Hell through a door to his left. This does not imply that Paradise and Hell are located in the lowest heaven; rather, its meaning is that Adam, while in the lowest heaven, has two doors opened for him into Paradise and Hell, through which he looks at the souls of his children therein. Indeed, the Prophet (ﷺ) saw Paradise and Hell during the eclipse prayer while he was on earth, yet Paradise is not on earth; and it was narrated that he saw both of them on the night of the Isra' while in heaven, yet Hell is not in heaven.

This is also corroborated by what is mentioned in the hadith of Abu Harun al-'Abdi (despite its weakness) on the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (ﷺ) in the lengthy narration of the Isra', where he mentioned the lowest heaven: "And behold, I was with a man in the form he had on the day Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created him, nothing of him having changed. The souls of his offspring were being presented before him. When it was a good soul and a sweet fragrance, he said: 'Place his record in 'Illiyyun.' And when it was the soul of a disbeliever, he said: 'A foul soul and a foul odor; place his record in Sijjin.' I asked: 'O Jibril, who is this?' He replied: 'This is your father, Adam.'" He then mentioned the narration. In this, it indicates that the souls of his offspring are presented before him in the lowest heaven and that he commands that the souls be placed in their permanent abode in 'Illiyyun and Sijjin. This proves that the permanent abode of the souls is not in the lowest heaven.

Ibn Hazm claimed that Allah created the souls all together before the bodies and placed them in a Barzakh (an intermediate realm), and that this Barzakh is located where the elements cease to exist, meaning where there is neither water, air, nor fire. He asserted that when Allah creates bodies, He enters those souls into them, and then upon seizing them in death, He returns them to that Barzakh. He claimed that this was what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw on the night of the Isra' at the lowest heaven: the souls of the people of bliss to the right of Adam.
