135. 'Abdullah ibn Jarir al-'Ataki narrated to us, [saying:] Badal ibn al-Muhabbir narrated to us, [saying:] 'Abd al-Salam ibn 'Ajlan al-'Adawi narrated to us, [saying:] Abu Yazid al-Madini narrated to us, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Bashir used to sit in a particular spot near the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) noticed his absence for three days. So he said to him: "O Bashir, what happened to you that my eyes have not seen you for three days?" He replied: "I bought a camel from so-and-so, and it stayed with me for a short while, but then it ran away. So I went looking for it, and I brought it back to its seller, who accepted it back from me." He (ﷺ) asked: "Had he stipulated any condition to you regarding it?" He replied: "No." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed, a runaway animal may be returned." Then he said: "Your face has been marked and your complexion changed from seeking this camel over three days? What then will you do on the Day when mankind stands before the Lord of the worlds, on a Day whose measure is twenty thousand years of what you count of worldly days, when no news comes to them from the heaven, nor is any decree issued concerning them, while they are barefoot and naked?" Bashir said: "Allah is the One Whose help is sought." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: "When you go to your people, seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection and from the evil of the Reckoning."
