Section 1: The Mahdi and Everything Pertaining to Him
Scholarly Note and Clarification
of victory and triumph are more numerous than the narrations of defeat, so they are given precedence. If they are to be reconciled, the method of reconciliation is that he suffers defeat in some skirmishes, and then the ultimate triumph belongs to him thereafter.
I say: It is mentioned in al-Tadhkirah that the Mahdi will be pledged allegiance twice. He said: For it is narrated in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he will emerge at the end of time from the Far West (al-Maghrib al-Aqsa), with victory marching forty miles ahead of him. His banners will be white and yellow, containing inscriptions wherein the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism Allah al-A'zam) is written, so no banner of his will ever be defeated. The rising of these banners and their departure will be from the sea coast at a place called Massa from the mountain of the Maghrib. He will bind these banners with a people for whom Allah has taken a covenant of victory and triumph: {Those are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, the party of Allah are the successful} [Al-Mujadilah: 22] - the hadith in its entirety.
The erudite scholar said in al-Bahjah: Some scholars said that he emerges from the Maghrib, and for that reason Banu Idris named themselves al-Mahdiyyah, hoping that he would be from among them. End quote.
Then he mentioned in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud: "People will come from every direction and place, and they will pledge allegiance to him on that day in Mecca, while he is between the Corner (al-Rukn) and the Station (al-Maqam), and he will be reluctant."
Al-Qurtubi said: This is the second pledge of allegiance, following the first allegiance that
