Subsection: The Manner and Timing of His Emergence

In the Mustadrak of al-Hakim, on the authority of Ibn Umar in a marfu' narration: "The one-eyed Dajjal will emerge from the Jewish quarter of Isfahan. One eye was not created for him, while the other is like a glistening star mixed with blood. He roasts fish in the heat of the sun and snatches birds right from the air. He has three mighty shouts that will be heard by the people of the East and the West."

As for his tribulation (fitnah): It is stated in the hadith: "There never was, nor will there ever be until the Hour is established, any tribulation greater than the tribulation of the Dajjal; and there was no prophet except that he warned his people against the Dajjal." The hadith was narrated by al-Hakim on the authority of Jabir as a marfu' narration. And in another hadith: "Three years prior to his emergence, in the first year the sky will withhold one-third of its rain, and the earth will withhold one-third of its vegetation; in the second year, the sky will withhold two-thirds of its rain, and the earth will withhold two-thirds of its vegetation; and in the third year, the sky will withhold all of its moisture, and every creature possessing molars or cloven hooves will perish."

And among his tribulations: "Two mountains will travel with him: one containing trees, fruits, and water, and the other containing smoke and fire; he will say: 'This is Paradise and this is Hellfire.'" It was narrated by al-Hakim on the authority of Ibn Amr. And on the authority of Hudhayfah: "With him will be a paradise and a fire, and men whom he kills and then brings back to life, and with him will be a mountain of broth and bread (tharid), and a river of water."

The Allamah stated in his 'Bahjah': It has been narrated that when he emerges, he will possess an image of Paradise and Hellfire, and that will be by way of optical illusion, not true reality; whoever he casts into his paradise will find it to be fire, and whoever he casts into his fire will find it to be paradise. And with him will be mountains of bread like massive white hail, as mentioned by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar.
