Al-Fakhr [al-Razi] said: Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, described the earth with several attributes. The first of them is its being a "qa'", which is a low, settled place on earth, and it is also said to mean a depression where water gathers. The second is "safsaf", which is that upon which there is no vegetation; and it has also been said that "al-qa'" and "al-safsaf" mean a smooth, level surface.
The third and fourth are: its being such that "you will see therein neither crookedness nor curve." Al-Zamakhshari said: "Al-Amatu" refers to a slight protrusion or mound, and "al-'Iwaju" (crookedness or depression) is well-known. From these four attributes, it follows that the earth on that Day will be completely smooth, devoid of elevation, depression, and all forms of deviation or crookedness. And he said regarding the words of Allah the Exalted: {"And you will see the earth prominent"} [Al-Kahf: 47], meaning exposed, having no buildings, mountains, or trees upon it, remaining visible and prominent with nothing to cover it; and that is precisely what is intended by His saying: {"You will not see therein any crookedness or any curve (107)"} [Ta-Ha: 107].
A Note of Benefit: Regarding the replacement of the earth, and where will mankind be on that Day? The Allamah said: The exegetes differed concerning the saying of Allah the Exalted: {"On the Day when the earth will be replaced by another earth"} [Ibrahim: 48], the verse, as to what is meant by the replacement: is it a replacement of its very essence, or
