Chapter 1: The Distant Signs That Have Already Appeared and Ended
Section: Among the Signs - Abundance of Earthquakes
And in Ibn Majah, on the authority of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Before the Hour, there will be metamorphosis (maskh), swallowing by the earth (khasf), and pelting with stones (qadhf)." And in al-Tirmidhi, on the authority of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), in a marfu' narration: "At the end of this Ummah, there will be swallowing by the earth, metamorphosis, and pelting." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, shall we be destroyed while the righteous are among us?" He said: "Yes, when wickedness becomes abundant."
We have already discussed the occurrence of swallowing by the earth (khasf). As for metamorphosis (maskh), it has indeed occurred to specific individuals, among which is what was narrated in 'al-Isha'ah'. He said: It has been authentically reported from more than one source that during the era of the Fatimids of Egypt, they (meaning the Rafidah) used to gather in al-Madinah on the Day of 'Ashura' under the Dome of al-'Abbas. There they would revile the two Sheikhs [Abu Bakr and 'Umar] (may Allah's pleasure be upon them both), and revile all the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). A man came and called out: "Who will feed me for the love of Abu Bakr?" An elderly man came out to him and signaled him to follow him. He took him to his house, cut off his tongue, placed it in his hand, and said: "This is for the love of Abu Bakr!" The man went to the Mosque, offered greetings of salam upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and upon the two Sheikhs (may Allah's pleasure be upon them both), and returned with his severed tongue in his hand. He sat grieved by the door of the Mosque until sleep overcame him. In his dream, he saw the Prophet (ﷺ), and with him was Abu Bakr...
