Chapter 1: The Distant Signs That Have Already Appeared and Ended

...on the Day of Resurrection; he will lead his people and bring them into the Fire, bringing disgrace upon them, and wretched is the destination to which they are led, and ruinous is the state in that witnessed gathering. He shot the Mushaf with arrows and did not fear sins. That occurred because he sought an omen by opening the Noble Mushaf, and there emerged: "And they sought victory, and disappointed was every obstinate tyrant" [Ibrahim: 15]. Thereupon, he tore up the Mushaf and said:

"Do you threaten me with an obstinate tyrant? Behold, before you I am an obstinate tyrant!

When you appear before your Lord on the Day of Gathering, then say: 'O my Lord, al-Walid tore me to pieces!'"

He had deemed wine lawful, as well as marrying the mothers of his father's children (slave-concubines), to the extent that he even solicited his brother Sulayman to commit immorality with him. He had numerous vices and scandals, even intending to perform the pilgrimage merely to drink wine on top of the Noble Ka'bah. Consequently, his cousin Yazid ibn al-Walid rose against him and killed him. Then Marwan al-Himar ibn Muhammad ibn Marwan rose to power, and when Yazid died, his brother Ibrahim took charge, but Marwan defeated him. Their affairs fell into disarray until the Abbasids overcame the kingdom and slaughtered them with the severest of killings. Glorified be He whose sovereignty never ends: "And these days [of varying fortunes] We alternate among the people" [Ali 'Imran: 140]. To Allah belongs the command before and after.

Thus, the demise of the Umayyad dynasty occurred in the year one hundred and thirty-two (132 AH).

Then, from the Abbasids, the first of their caliphs was al-Saffah, followed by his brother al-Mansur, then his son al-Mahdi, then his son al-Hadi, then his brother al-Rashid, then his son al-Amin, then his brother al-Ma'mun, who was the one who subjected Imam Ahmad to the trial, followed by al-Mu'tasim, who was the one who flogged our master Imam Ahmad. Then came al-Mu'tasim's son, al-Wathiq, who was even more wicked than his father. Then his brother al-Mutawakkil came, and he manifested and championed the Sunnah, may Allah have mercy upon him and be pleased with him. He was subsequently killed by his son al-Muntasir, who survived only a short while thereafter, followed by al-Musta'in, then al-Mu'tazz, then...
