Chapter 1: The Distant Signs That Have Already Appeared and Ended

"...the people, and then bring them to trial before me." So Mu'awiyah mobilized from the Levant (al-Sham) and 'Ali from Kufa, and both armies met at Siffin. They fought a fierce battle until the number of the slain reached thirty thousand.

The author of al-Tadhkirah stated: "The stay of 'Ali and Mu'awiyah at Siffin lasted seven months; it was also said: nine months, and it was said: three months. During three of the mid-month days (namely the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth), seventy-three thousand men were killed from both sides."

The trustworthy and just narrator Abu Ishaq mentioned: "Among those nights was the Night of al-Harir, wherein they began clamoring and growling at one another. Al-Harir is a sound resembling wailing, because they shot arrows at each other until they were completely exhausted, thrust with spears until they were shattered, and struck with swords until they snapped. Then the men dismounted and advanced on foot toward one another, having broken the scabbards of their swords, fighting with what remained of their swords and with iron rods, so that nothing could be heard except the muffled groans of the men and iron striking skulls. When the swords became blunted and curved like sickles, they pelted one another with stones, then fell to their knees, flinging dust into one another's faces, and then bit each other with their teeth. The sun was obscured, darkness settled, dust billowed high, standards and banners were lost, and the times of four prayers passed, for the fighting had commenced after their morning prayer and raged until midnight. That took place in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal in the year thirty-seven [AH]." The Imam stated this in his Tarikh (history), and the people of al-Sham...
