Chapter 1: The Distant Signs That Have Already Appeared and Ended
Among them is the assassination of the Commander of the Faithful, 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). Indeed, it is authentically reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned a tribulation, and 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, so he said: "This man on that day will be upon the right guidance." And he said to 'Uthman: "Indeed, Allah will clothe you with a garment (meaning: grant you the Caliphate), so if the hypocrites seek to strip you of it, do not take it off until you meet me." And Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The first of tribulations is the killing of 'Uthman, and the last of them is the emergence of the Dajjal (False Messiah)."
Ibn 'Asakir added in his narration: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, there is no man who has in his heart even the weight of a mustard seed of approval for the killing of 'Uthman except that he will follow the Dajjal if he reaches his time; and if he does not reach him, he will believe in him in his grave."
A summary of the account of his martyrdom (may Allah be pleased with him) is that they criticized him for certain matters. Among these was that he had appointed Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) over Egypt. While he was on the way, behold, he encountered a servant of 'Uthman riding his camel, heading toward Egypt. They brought him and asked him about his business, but he did not inform them. So they searched him and found on him a letter to the governor of Egypt stating: "Kill Muhammad." Muhammad then returned to Madinah, and four thousand rabble from Mudar, Tamim, and others gathered against 'Uthman. They questioned him regarding the servant and the letter, and he replied: "I have no knowledge of this." They said: "This is the deed of Marwan," having recognized his handwriting, and demanded: "Hand him over to us." But he refused. They then demanded that he abdicate the Caliphate, but he did not do so, in compliance with the instruction of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
