Section 11: The First Trumpet Blast of Terror (Nafkhat al-Faza) and the Disruption of the Cosmic Order

I say: The matter revolves around the fact that they (the sun and the moon) will be taken to one of two places: either to the Fire or to the Throne. As for the sea, it is subsumed under the Fire according to the view of those who maintain that it is the Fire itself, or that it will turn into fire and be adjoined to the Fire. As for the veils, they are subsumed under the concept of their being wound up and taken to the Throne, for by the veils we mean that which is beneath the Throne. Thus, what we stated becomes clear, namely, that they will either be taken to the Throne (and there is no difference whether they are wound up and enter into it directly, or enter into the light of its veils), or to the Fire.

Reconciling between the two views is achieved by saying that they may be wound up and cast into the Fire first, so that those who worshipped them besides Allah may see them, as a rebuke, humiliation, and disgrace for them, and thereafter they will be taken to the Throne. This is what appears most evident, and Allah knows best. A part of this was alluded to in al-Bahjah.

The verifying scholar, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him), mentioned in his book "Miftah Dar al-Sa'adah": A gathering of eminent and virtuous scholars assembled one day, and a reciter recited: {When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] (1) And when the stars fall, dispersing (2) And when the mountains are made to pass away (3)} [Al-Takwir: 1-3], until he reached: {A soul will [then] know what it has brought with it} [Al-Takwir: 14]. Among the group was Imam Abu al-Wafa' Ibn 'Aqil (may Allah have mercy on him). Someone said to him: 'O my master! Grant that the dead are resurrected for the Reckoning and souls are paired with their counterparts for reward and punishment; but what is the wisdom behind demolishing structures, setting mountains in motion, leveling the earth, cleaving the heavens, scattering the stars, destroying this cosmic realm, wrapping up its sun, and eclipsing its moon?' Imam Ibn 'Aqil replied spontaneously: 'He only built this abode for them to dwell in...'
