His saying: "(and roads will be narrowed)"; meaning: they will construct benches along public pathways, sit upon them, engage in idle and false speech, and obstruct and narrow the roads for passersby.

His saying: "(and the orators of your pulpits will multiply)"; meaning: they do not deliver sermons for the sake of Allah nor due to true merit, but rather they purchase the post of delivering sermons (khitabah), causing many to covet it; indeed, we have seen more than twenty preachers assigned to a single mosque.

His saying: "(your scholars will incline [toward rulers])" etc.; meaning: the scholars will incline toward kings and rulers, issuing religious verdicts according to their desires even if it contradicts the Shariah, thereby pursuing worldly gains. Consequently, they make lawful for them the forbidden things, such as musical instruments, consuming unlawful wealth, arrogance, vanity, and unjust taxes (al-makus), while making unlawful for them the lawful matters, such as humility, asceticism, establishing the prescribed legal penalties (al-hudud), and the like.

His saying: "(and your scholars will acquire knowledge...)" etc.; meaning: they do not seek knowledge for the sake of Allah or for their religion, but their sole intention in learning is to acquire worldly gains.

Among the signs of this is that their greatest inclination is toward philosophies and theoretical sciences, so you find them ignorant of the Sunnah and the rulings of Islamic jurisprudence, yet they consider themselves to be scholars of Islam. To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un).

His saying: "(you take the Qur'an as merchandise)"; meaning: if they are paid a wage for reciting, they recite, and if not, they do not recite.

His saying: "(you neglect the right of Allah in your wealth)"; meaning: concerning Zakah and other financial obligations, either by failing to pay them entirely or by violating some of their required conditions regarding rightful recipients, the due amount, and other aspects.

His saying: "(and you drink intoxicants in your public gatherings)"; meaning: in your public assemblies without concealing it, but rather drinking it openly and brazenly.

This is not a redundancy with the earlier statement: "(and intoxicants will be drunk)"; because that refers to drinking generally without the stipulation of doing so openly, unlike this occurrence.

The same applies to the previously mentioned hadith of Hudhayfah: "And intoxicants will be drunk on the roads."

His saying: "(and you gamble and play the drums [al-kabar])" etc.
