Then Allah, the Exalted, discloses to him the divinely legislated ruling concerning that specific incident, which Allah had legislated for His Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to judge by; thus, he only judges by that very ruling, never erring. If Allah conceals the ruling from him in certain incidents and no spiritual disclosure (kashf) occurs to him regarding it, his ultimate recourse is to append it in ruling to the permissible (mubah), knowing through the absence of disclosure that this is the ruling of the Sacred Law regarding it. For indeed, he is divinely protected from personal opinion (ra'y) and analogical deduction (qiyas) in religion; because qiyas, when practiced by one who is not a prophet, amounts to passing judgment upon Allah concerning Allah's religion without knowledge. It is merely the continuous application of an effective cause ('illah), and what could make you know whether Allah might not desire the application of that cause? If He had intended it, He would have made it clear through the tongue of His Messenger and commanded its application.

This applies even if the effective cause ('illah) is one explicitly stipulated by the Sacred Law in a particular case; so what then would you think of a cause that the jurist extracts through his own intellect and contemplation without the Sacred Law having mentioned it, and then applies it universally?!

This would be an arbitrary imposition upon an arbitrary imposition, through a law for which Allah has granted no authority.

This prevents al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) from adopting analogical deduction (qiyas) in the religion of Allah, especially since he knows that the Prophet's (ﷺ) intention was to lighten the burden of obligation upon this Ummah. For this reason, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: "Leave me alone as long as I leave you alone," and he disliked excessive questioning regarding religion out of fear that additional obligations might be decreed. Therefore, whatever is kept silent regarding him, such that he is not granted disclosure of a specific ruling concerning it, his final course of action in it is to judge according to the original state of permissibility (al-asl). And whatever Allah reveals to him through disclosure and direct notification, that is the very ruling of the Muhammadan Sacred Law in that matter.

At times, Allah may disclose to him the permissible as being permissible and a source of well-being. Thus, every benefit that pertains to his subjects, Allah discloses it to him so that he may petition Him for it; and every harm or corruption that Allah intends to befall his subjects, Allah discloses it to him so that he may petition Allah to avert it, because it is a punishment.

Thus, al-Mahdi is Allah's mercy, just as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was a mercy; Allah, the Exalted, said: {And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds}. And al-Mahdi follows in his footsteps without erring; therefore, he must inevitably be a mercy.

These, then, are nine matters that collectively have not been established for any leader among the leaders of religion, the vicegerents of Allah, the Exalted, and of His Messenger (ﷺ) until the Day of Resurrection, except for this Imam al-Mahdi. Likewise, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not explicitly designate any leader among the leaders of religion who would come after him stating that he...
