...the Byzantines (al-Rum) to send them in assemblies, so they are sent to him, and he strikes their necks at the gate of the city in Damascus. Then a rupture breaches behind them, so he turns back toward them and kills a group of them. They are routed until they enter the land of Khurasan, and the cavalry of the Sufyani advances in pursuit of them like the night and a torrential flood; it does not pass by anything without destroying and demolishing it. He demolishes the fortresses and destroys the citadels until he enters al-Zawra (which is Baghdad), where he kills one hundred thousand of its inhabitants. Then he marches toward Kufa, where he kills sixty thousand of its inhabitants, capturing women and children. He disperses his troops across the lands, reaching most of the East up to the land of Khurasan, and they hunt down the people of Khurasan in every direction. He dispatches an expedition to Medina, and they seize whomever they can from the family of Muhammad (ﷺ), and they slaughter men and women from Banu Hashim. A group of them is brought to Kufa, while the rest are scattered throughout the wilderness. At that time, al-Mahdi and al-Mubayyid (and in one narration: al-Mansur) flee to Mecca among seven individuals and hide there. Then the ruler of Medina sends a message to the ruler of Mecca: 'When so-and-so and so-and-so arrive before you (and he writes their names), kill them.' The ruler of Mecca deems this grave, then they confer among themselves; they come to him by night seeking his protection, and he says: 'Go out safely.' So they depart, but then he sends after two men among them, and one of them is killed while the other looks on, and they slay al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah (the Pure Soul) between the Corner and the Station (Maqam Ibrahim). Thereupon, Allah becomes wrathful, and the dwellers of the heavens become wrathful. The other man returns to his companions and informs them; thus, they depart until they descend upon one of the mountains of al-Ta'if, residing there and sending word to the people. Consequently, people stream toward them. When that occurs, the people of Mecca attack them, but they defeat the people of Mecca, enter Mecca, slay its governor, and remain in Mecca until the emergence of al-Mahdi.

Notice

It has been reported on the authority of Abu 'Abdillah al-Husayn ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: 'For the master of this affair (meaning: al-Mahdi, peace be upon him) there are two occultations; one of them will last so long that some will say: He has died, and others will say: He has departed. And no one will be aware of his whereabouts, neither a close supporter nor anyone else, except the servant who tends to his affairs.'

And these two occultations (and Allah knows best) are what has just preceded: that he hides in the mountains of al-Ta'if, then people stream to him, and he appears with them and defeats the people of Mecca; subsequently, he conceals himself in the mountains of Mecca, and no one becomes aware of his whereabouts.
