They hesitated, and two of them said: "Inform us about this march of yours; is it an instruction with which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) specifically entrusted you, or is it an opinion you have formed?" He replied: "As for that, by Allah, if I was the first to believe in the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I shall certainly not be the first to lie against him! By Allah, as for it being a specific covenant from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to me, no, it was not. However, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not die suddenly, nor was he slain; rather, he remained in his illness for days and nights. During all that time, the mu'adhdhin would come to him to announce the prayer, and he would say: 'Command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' He left me while seeing my place, and I was not absent; had he entrusted anything to me, I would have undertaken it. Even when one of his wives objected to that, saying: 'Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man; if he stands in your place, the people will not hear him; would that you command 'Umar to lead the people in prayer?', the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Indeed, you are like the female companions of Yusuf.'"

"So when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away, we considered the matter and saw that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had entrusted him with the affairs of our religion, so we entrusted him with the affairs of our worldly life. I pledged allegiance to him along with the Muslims and faithfully fulfilled his allegiance. Then I pledged allegiance to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and faithfully fulfilled his allegiance. Then I pledged allegiance to 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and faithfully fulfilled his allegiance. Then people transgressed against him and murdered him while I had secluded myself from them. Then they placed me in authority, and had it not been out of fear for the religion, I would not have answered their call. Then there sprang up against it one whose precedence is not like my precedence, whose kinship is not like my kinship, and whose knowledge is not like my knowledge" - meaning Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him).

They said: "You have spoken the truth. So inform us about your fighting against these two, who were your companions at Badr, al-Hudaybiyyah, and Uhud, and your brothers in faith, precedence, and migration" - meaning Talhah and al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both).

He replied: "Indeed, both of them pledged allegiance to me in Madinah and revoked it in Basra. Had any man from among those who pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) broken his allegiance, we would have fought him, and had any man from among those who pledged allegiance to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) broken his allegiance, we would have fought him."

Then he invited them for three days. When the third day came, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them) entered upon him and said: "They have inflicted numerous wounds upon us." That was because the murderers of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) were dispersed throughout both armies, and they feared that the two sides might reconcile upon their execution, so they provoked the war. The youths of both armies began insulting one another, then threw stones and arrows at each other, followed by the slaves, and then the foolish elements. Thereupon, 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed two rak'ahs, supplicated to his Lord, and then said: "If you prevail over the people, do not pursue anyone who retreats, do not finish off any wounded person, and observe whatever was brought to the battlefield of..."
