Note: The meaning of "al-Surm"
"...women have not yet borne him; and the last of them shall surely be petty thieves and highwaymen."
'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: "A people will emerge from the east reciting the Qur'an, but it will not pass beyond their collarbones. Whenever a faction among them is cut off, another faction will arise, until the last of them emerges alongside the Dajjal (False Messiah)."
And on the authority of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Whoever is killed by the Haruriyyah (Kharijites) is a martyr."
And from al-Hasan, who said: When 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought and defeated the Haruriyyah, they asked: "Who are these people, O Commander of the Faithful? Are they disbelievers?" He replied: "From disbelief they fled." It was said: "Are they hypocrites then?" He said: "Indeed, hypocrites do not remember Allah except a little, whereas these people remember Allah abundantly." It was asked: "What are they then?" He answered: "A people afflicted by a trial, wherein they became blind and deaf."
Among the remnants of these were the Qaramitah (Carmathians), and of them are the Batiniyyah and the Isma'iliyyah. Their tribulation is well known; they ruined the servants of Allah and caused corruption in the lands, and reference to them will follow.
And among them (the signs) is: The abdication of the Commander of the Faithful, al-Hasan ibn 'Ali, in favor of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with them both):
Nu'aym narrated from Sufyan [ibn al-Layl], who said: I came to al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) after his return to Madinah, and I said to him: "O disgrace (or ruiner) of the believers!" Among the arguments he presented to me in reply was that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "The days and nights shall not pass away until the affairs of this Ummah unite under a man of broad stature, large throat, who eats and is never satiated." That man was Mu'awiyah, and thus I knew that the decree of Allah was inevitably coming to pass.
Al-Daylami narrated from al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "The days and nights shall not pass away until Mu'awiyah comes to rule."

Note
It is stated in "al-Nihayah": Al-Surm refers to the rear. Al-Dakhm means great. And its intended meaning here is: the mighty ruler who holds dominion over the entire land. End quote.
[His statement (ﷺ): "He eats and is never satiated"] Is this meant literally? For Mu'awiyah...
