Abu Ali al-Sufi narrated to me, saying: I heard al-Husayn ibn Makhlad ibn Maymun say: A good neighbor of ours passed away, and he had bequeathed that it be written upon his grave: 'This is the abode of decay, and the Hereafter is the abode of recompense, and Allah is the Most Merciful of the merciful. O You Who are the Most Merciful of the merciful, have mercy upon Your wretched servant, who is in dire need of Your mercy, with a mercy that will make him independent of the mercy of anyone other than You! O You Who are more merciful to me than my father and my mother! May Allah have mercy upon whoever reads this and supplicates for good. Amin, O Lord of the worlds!' He [al-Husayn] also said: And I saw written upon a grave: 'O you whom wealth has made arrogant and the lusts of this worldly life have intoxicated, prepare for the greatest journey, for your descent among the people of decay has drawn near.'
