Marwan ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi narrated to me: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir narrated to me that an elderly man from the insolent elders of the Jahiliyyah said, "O Muhammad, three things have reached me that you say, which it is not befitting for any person of intellect to

believe you in: It has reached me that you say the Arabs will abandon what they and their forefathers used to worship, that you will conquer the treasures of Khosrow and Caesar, and that we shall be resurrected after we die." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the Arabs shall surely abandon what they and their forefathers used to worship, and you shall surely conquer the treasures of Khosrow and Caesar, and you shall surely die and be resurrected, and I will surely take you by the hand on the Day of Resurrection and remind you of this saying of yours." The man said, "And will you not lose me among the dead, nor forget me?" He (ﷺ) replied, "I will neither lose you among the dead, nor will I forget you." So the elder lived until the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed away, and he witnessed the Muslims prevailing over the treasures of Khosrow and Caesar. Thereupon, he embraced Islam and perfected his faith. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) would frequently hear his weeping in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) out of longing for what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had promised him. 'Umar would at times approach him to gently calm him down and say, "You have indeed embraced Islam, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) promised to take you by the hand; and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) does not take anyone by the hand on the Day of Resurrection except that he attains success and eternal happiness."
