"...like a day, and a day will be like an hour, and an hour will be like the burning of a dry palm leaf in fire." I say: Some scholars mentioned that prayer is to be estimated in these days as well, by analogy with what has preceded, and its detailed exposition will follow shortly. And Allah knows best.
The resolution regarding the discrepancy between the two hadiths is achieved either through preference (tarjih) or reconciliation (jam'). If we apply preference, then the hadith of al-Nawwas recorded by Imam Ahmad, Muslim, and al-Tirmidhi is stronger because it is more authentic; even though the second hadith is also in the Sahih, this one is given precedence over it. If we reconcile them, the manner of reconciliation is that his days are forty years, and the years are termed 'days' metaphorically,
just as it is said 'the days of Banu al-Zubayr', 'the days of Umar ibn al-Khattab', and 'the days of the Umayyads'. Furthermore, the first day of his first year will be like a year, the second like a month, the third like a week, and the rest of its days will be like our ordinary days. Then the days of the second year will diminish until the year becomes like half a year, and so forth, until a year becomes like a month, a month like a week, and a week like a day, so that by the end of his days a person might set out in the morning from one gate of the city and not reach its other gate until evening. Thus, the first year will encompass the duration of several of our years, while his final years will equal the span of a single year of our years. This interpretation is supported by the narration of al-Hakim and Nu'aym from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in a marfu' transmission that he (the Dajjal) will say: 'I am the Lord of the worlds, and this sun moves by my leave; do you wish that I detain it?' So he will detain the sun until he makes the day like a month and like a week, and he will say: 'Do you wish that I make it move swiftly?' and he will make the day like an hour.' (To the end of the hadith).
