Ibn Mardawayh narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "The sun will continue to traverse from its place of rising to its place of setting until the time arrives that Allah has appointed for the repentance of His servants. Then the sun will ask for permission from where it should rise, and the moon will ask for permission from where it should rise, but neither will be granted permission. Thus, they will be detained for the duration of three nights for the sun, and two nights for the moon. None will know the length of their detention except a few people, who are the remaining inhabitants of the earth and the bearers of the Qur'an. In that night, each man among them will recite his regular portion (wird) of the Qur'an, and when he finishes it, he will look and find the night still as it was. None will know the length of that night except the bearers of the Qur'an. Then they will call out to one another, gathering in their mosques in humble supplication, weeping, and crying out for the remainder of that night. The measure of that night will be three nights. Then Allah will send Gabriel to the sun and the moon, saying: 'The Lord, the Exalted, commands you both to return to your setting places and rise from them, for there is neither light nor radiance for you with Us.' The sun and the moon will weep out of fear of the Day of Resurrection and fear of death. The sun and the moon will return and rise from their setting places. While the people are thus weeping and pleading humbly before Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the heedless are submerged in their heedlessness, a caller will suddenly cry out: 'Behold! The gate of repentance has been closed, and the sun and the moon have risen from their place of setting!' Then the people will look and behold, both of them will be black like two large sacks, possessing neither light nor radiance. That is the meaning of His saying: {And the sun and the moon are joined together} [al-Qiyamah: 9]."

Clarification
('Al-'Ukmah'): It means a large sack (al-ghirarah); that is, like two massive sacks. From this comes the term used for the one who fastens sacks upon a camel: 'al-'Akkaam'. In the hadith of Umm Zar', it occurs: 'Her sacks are laden and heavy (rukumuhā radāh).'
"Then both of them will rise like two coupled camels, each contending with the other to outpace it. The inhabitants of the world will shriek in terror, mothers will become heedless of their children, and every pregnant female will drop her burden.
As for the righteous and the pious: their weeping on that day will benefit them and will be written down for them as an act of worship.
As for the corrupt and the wicked: their weeping on that day will not benefit them, and it will be recorded against them as sorrow and remorse.
When the sun and the moon reach the navel of the sky, which is its midpoint, Gabriel will come to them, seize them by their horns, and turn them back toward the west. He will not cause them to set in the direction opposite to their rising on that day (which would be the east), but rather he will cause them to set in their original setting place where the Gate of Repentance is located."
