۞

'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Thabit narrated to us, Sa'id ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, Nasr ibn Marzuq narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Ma'bad narrated to us, Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid narrated to us, from Hariz ibn 'Uthman, from some of the elders, who attributed it [to the Prophet (ﷺ)], saying: "Indeed, when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, casts a tribulation upon a people, such that even if prophets were among them they would be tried, He strips every possessor of intellect of his intellect, every possessor of sound judgment of his judgment, and every possessor of understanding of his understanding. Then He leaves them to surge in confusion within it. But when He restores to them what He had taken from them, they fall into profound sorrow and mutual reproach over what has passed them by."
